DEMONS RUN TO TITLE EASY AS 1-2-3

Justin Moseby, Matt Nolan and Robby Rakes placed 1-2-3 for Christiansburg as the Blue Demons captured the boys' New River District cross country title Wednesday at Virginia Tech.

Moseby ran the course in 16 minutes, 45 seconds. Michael Lee finished sixth and Greg Turpin came in 10th as the Blue Demons placed five runners in the top 10. Blacksburg was second and Carroll County third as all three teams advance to the regional meet.

Blacksburg won the girls' team title as Sarah Hendricks outran Christiansburg's Laura Evans by almost two minutes, covering the course in 19:40. Blacksburg's Amy Feuerbach, Shelli Stevens and Jennifer Shepherd rounded out the top five. Christiansburg was second in the girls' competition.

Jamar Bryson of Galax and Laura Gray of Fort Chiswell won individual titles at the Mountain Empire District cross country championships in Fort Chiswell.

Bryson covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 45 seconds to lead the Maroon Tide to the team title.

Gray paced the Pioneers to the girls' crown by finishing in a time of 24:02.

Stuart Bray of Northside and Briana Grose of William Byrd took home individual titles, and Alleghany swept the team competition at the Blue Ridge District cross country championships in Lexington.

Bray edged teammate Tommy Maguire by 11 seconds as the Vikings took the top two spots. Alleghany won the boys' team title by two points over Lord Botetourt after placing four runners in the top 15. Jeremy Bartley led the Mountaineers by finishing third with teammate Keenan Entsminger coming in ninth.

Grose easily won the girls' crown by running the course in 21.43 to defeat second-place finisher Heather Chaffin of Lord Botetourt. Alleghany knocked off William Byrd by five points, 31-36, to win the girls' competition after placing four runners in the top 10. The Mountaineers' top runner was Tracy Barger, who came in fourth.

Glenvar's Trish Nervo and Covington's Brent Young each set course records en route to the individual titles and Bath County swept the team titles at the Pioneer District cross country championships in Hot Springs.

Nervo ran the 3.1-mile course in 19:06 to outdistance second-place Kathie Burns from Bath County. The Chargers easily won the girls' team title with 23 points compared to Glenvar's 35 as Bath County placed six runners in the top 10.

Young also set a course record, finishing in 17:57 to defeat John Nervo of Glenvar. David Buzzard and Matt Adams of Bath County came in third and fourth, respectively, as the Chargers placed five runners in the top 10 to win the boys' team title.

Ben Cooke and Johanna Neumann of Floyd County won individual titles at the Three Rivers District cross country championships held at Camp Alta-Mons in Shawsville.

Cooke ran the course in 17:23 to defeat second-place teammate Andrew Weeks as the duo led Floyd County to the boys' team title. Radford, led by Mike Fisher's fourth-place finish, came in second and Shawsville was third.

Neumann ran the course in 20:35 to edge Radford's Charlee Taylor. Giles won the team title and Radford came in second. The Spartans, led by Jessica Clark's third-place finish, placed five runners in the top 10.

Cindy Parlow recorded a hat trick and Tiffany Roberts and Rakel Karvelsson scored two goals each as top-ranked North Carolina remained unbeaten with a 9-0 win over Radford in a non-conference women's soccer game in Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina is now 19-0 and has won 29 straight.

Radford junior Eric Rarus' goal with 6:29 left in regulation forced a 1-1 tie with James Madison in a non-conference men's soccer game in Harrisonburg.

The Dukes (14-2-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jake Edwards in the first half before Rarus' goal tied the game for Radford (11-3-3). Sacha Drouin had eight saves for Radford.

Mike Fisher, Matt Leonard and Joss Dunn each scored goals as Virginia downed Robert Morris 3-0 in a non-conference men's college soccer game in Charlottesville.

In Danville, Ferrum defeated Averett College 3-0 in a Dixie Conference soccer game. It was Ferrum's third consecutive shutout behind goalie Stevie Reynolds, who had three saves. Isaac Minnis, Rodolpho Salvatierra and Ken Howe scored goals for the Panthers (6-7-1 overall, 3-3 Dixie).

First-year Washington and Lee men's basketball coach Kevin Moore is among the speakers Nov. 4 at W&L's first coaches' clinic.

Other speakers include Northside High School coach Bill Pope, VMI head coach Bart Bellairs and Virginia men's basketball assistant Tom Perrin.
