The youthful performers, winners of the 1995 Virginia Music Teachers Association Annual Concerto Competition, will perform with the orchestra in a concert that coincides with the association's convention this weekend. The Virginia Tech Music Department hosts the gathering.
Jeremy McEntire, a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University, began his musical studies at age 3 in his native Paraguay. While pursuing a degree in flute performance, McEntire also teaches the Suzuki method at music schools in Richmond. He will perform the "Carmen Fantasy" by Francois Borne, a piece based on famous melodies from the opera by Bizet.
Nathan Hess, a junior piano performance major at James Madison University, has won numerous honors including the university's 1995 Concerto Competition and first prize in Old Dominion University's Classical Period Piano Competition. He will perform the first movement of Serge Rachmaninoff's "Second Piano Concerto."
Jessica Osborne, a 16-year-old pianist being home-schooled by her mother in Reston, has been playing the piano for 12 years: eight with her mother, Patricia Osborne, and the last four years with a piano teacher. Recent honors include first place in the Alexandria Performing Arts Association Piano Competition. She was also a semifinalist in the International Stravinsky Awards Piano Competition in Illinois. She will perform the first movement of Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor."
Sonya Chung, a 14-year-old high school freshman from Richmond, began her violin studies at age 5. By 7, Chung had played with the Richmond Symphony Young Performers Program as concertmistress with the String Sinfonietta. She has won first place in the Richmond Symphony Orchestra Student Concerto Competition.
She has appeared as soloist with the Richmond Symphony, the Williamsburg Symphonia, and the Greater Richmond Youth Symphony Orchestra. She is currently studying music at Virginia Commonwealth University.
She will perform the third movement of the Saint-Saens "Violin Concerto No. 3 in B Minor."
The New River Valley Symphony, conducted by James Glazebrook, will also perform two short orchestra pieces: "Outdoor Overture" by American composer Aaron Copeland and "Sensemaya" by Silvestre Revueltas, one of Mexico's foremost musicians.
