PAGE HIGGINBOTHAM, EX-LEGISLATOR, DIES

S. Page Higginbotham, a lawyer and farmer who served two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates, has died of leukemia. He was 79.

Higginbotham, who died Thursday in a Charlottesville hospital, had lived in Orange County.

Higginbotham served as Orange County commonwealth's attorney from 1943 until 1971. In 1957, he was elected to the Virginia Constitutional Convention.

Running as a Republican in 1987, he was elected to represent the 30th House District, which consisted of Greene, Madison and Orange counties and part of Culpeper County. He served on the courts of justice, agriculture, and military and police committees.

``Page Higginbotham was sort of a country lawyer, because he took most any case, regardless of anybody's financial circumstances,'' said George P. Beard, who preceded him in the 30th District seat. ``He was always giving to the less fortunate.''

Del. John Davies, D-Culpeper, described Higginbotham as a leader who gave himself to the community.

``I am very appreciative of the public service that Page has provided,'' said Davies, who now represents the 30th District. ``He was a leader in the profession and he was very generous with his time in trying to help people.''

An Amherst County native, Higginbotham earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1936 and a law degree in 1940, both from the University of Virginia.

He helped start the first football team at Orange County High School.
