RICHMOND RALLY STUNS JMU 34-33

Quarterback Joe Elrod came off the bench to engineer a 20-point fourth-quarter rally Saturday, running for two touchdowns in the game's final minutes, as Richmond stunned James Madison 34-33 in a Yankee Conference game in Harrisonburg.

James Madison (6-3 overall, 4-2 conference) has won three games in the final minute this season and nearly made it four. Time expired as Bryan Leibrand pulled down the Dukes' Macey Brooks on the Richmond 1-yard line.

After Paul Harris intercepted a Jason Gabrels pass and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown with 8:34 remaining, JMU led 33-14.

Elrod replaced Gabrels for the Spiders (6-1-1, 4-1) and engineered a 13-play, 65-yard scoring drive, capped by a 16-yard quarterback draw. Minoso Rodgers' run for the two-point conversion was stopped, leaving the score at 33-20.

The Spiders then recovered an onside kick and drove to the Dukes' 9 before Elrod's fumble was recovered by JMU's Doug Bigelow. On the Dukes' first play after the turnover, Dee Townes fumbled after being hit by Leibrand, who scooped up the ball and ran 9 yards for a score with 2:48 left. Greyson Masters kicked the extra point to make it 33-27.

On the next series, James Madison again fumbled away the ball. Damon Roberts gained 15 yards to the Dukes' 35, where he dropped the ball. Art Blanchard recovered it, and the Spiders were back in business.

Four plays later, Elrod scored from 1 yard with 59 seconds left, and Masters kicked the extra point for the winning score.

Mike Cawley, who had engineered the Dukes' come-from-behind victories, used most of those 59 seconds to drive to the Spiders' 43 before being sacked for a 9-yard loss. Faced with a fourth-and-19, Cawley hit Brooks on a 51-yard pass that left the ball at the 1-yard line as time expired.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Emory & Henry 29, Clinch Valley 20: Aaron Brand threw for two touchdowns and J.D. Davis rushed for 103 yards on 27 carries as the Wasps, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions, defeated the Highland Cavaliers (8-1) in Wise.

Emory & Henry (8-0) held Clinch Valley to 50 yards rushing and recovered three fumbles.

Brand had touchdown passes of 35 yards to Aaron Fuller and 24 yards to Harry Green and was 9-of-19 for 148 yards. The Emory & Henry defense accounted for eight points on a safety and a fumble recovery in the end zone.

William and Mary 18, Villanova 15: Brian Shallcross kicked two field goals in the game's final two minutes - the last a 47-yarder with no time remaining - as the Tribe edged the Wildcats in a Yankee Conference game in Williamsburg.

Shallcross tied the score at 15 when he hit a 29-yarder with 1:40 left. William and Mary (6-2, 4-2) stopped Villanova (2-6, 1-4) on downs and marched into Wildcats territory.

Villanova called back-to-back timeouts to make Shallcross think about the 47-yarder. Shallcross, who has made 12 of 14 field-goal attempts this season, calmly kicked the winning score. Shallcross also had field goals of 25 and 30 yards.

Liberty 19, Charleston Southern 15: Antwan Chiles hit Robert Butz with a 7-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to rally the Flames past the Buccaneers in Charleston, S.C.

The defeat spoiled a strong performance by Charleston Southern quarterback Ruben Potts, who completed a school-record 17 passes (in 32 attempts) for 274 yards, another school record. He threw for one touchdown.

After the Bucs rallied from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter with 15 points, Liberty's Andrew McFadden returned a Williams punt to the Charleston Southern 18-yard line. Five plays later, Butz hauled in the Chiles pass for the winning score.

Liberty's Lawrence Worthington rushed for two touchdowns.

Hampton 36, Elizabeth City State 13: Malcolm Benson rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Pirates (6-2) past the Vikings (6-3) in a meeting of former Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals in Hampton.

Benson was limited to 22 yards on six carries, but he made his attempts count with scoring runs of 8 yards and 1 yard. Tyrone Mayer rushed 13 times for 98 yards to lead Hampton.

Hampden-Sydney 22, Davidson 19: Brian DeFade's 16-yard touchdown run with 10:53 to play was the difference as the Tigers (3-5) withstood two late Wildcats rallies in Davidson, N.C., to snap a three-game losing streak.

DeFade's touchdown run capped a 62-yard, eight-play drive, and tight end Heath Spencer tossed a two-point conversion pass to wide receiver Preston Montague.

Davidson (1-7) drove to the Hampden-Sydney 24, but Dunn Mileham's 41-yard field-goal attempt hit the right upright and bounced away with 5:47 remaining. On their next possession, the Wildcats moved to the Tigers' 25, but freshman defensive back Chuck Felder intercepted a Cliff Henry pass

Randolph-Macon 27, Guilford 10: Sidney Chappell ran for two touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets (4-3-1, 2-1-0) to an ODAC victory over the Quakers (3-4, 1-3) in Greensboro, N.C.

Randolph-Macon (4-3-1) forced three turnovers, turning one of them into a touchdown in the second quarter when Chappell scored on a 2-yard run with 10:43 left in the half.

The loss overshadowed the 10th 100-yard rushing performance of sophomore David Heggie's career. The tailback ran for 113 yards on 13 carries, becoming Guilford's career rushing leader with 1,890 yards in 17 games.
