There were concerns Gallentine might lose his left eye after being high-sticked by Wheeling defenseman Brock Woods at the 52-second mark of the second period. Gallentine, a 22-year-old rookie from Jackson, Mich., was taken to Wheeling Hospital, where doctors performed exploratory surgery. He will remain in the hospital for at least two more days, according to Express general manager Pierre Paiement.
Paiement said doctors first considered removing Gallentine's eye, but the surgery showed there were no tears in the retina and tissue behind the eye.
``Apparently, everything [is] positive,'' Paiement said. ``There was some blood behind his eye, but no tears or anything. The retina was'' intact.
Paiement has not seen videotape of the play, but he has written a letter to ECHL commissioner Pat Kelly asking him to review the tape. Woods received a four-minute penalty for high-sticking on the play.
Paiement didn't know when or if Gallentine would return to the ice.
``That's the next question,'' Paiement said. ``I don't know when we'll know the answer to that. We'll have to wait and see.''
In other player news, the Express learned forward Louis-Phillipe Charbonneau has been released by the Cornwall (Ontario) Aces of the American Hockey League and will be coming to Roanoke. Charbonneau was on the Express' preseason roster, but he attended Cornwall's training camp and made the team.
Charbonneau had 18 goals and 403 penalty minutes in 47 games last season with Victoriaville and Hull of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
``We need to see him practice on Thursday and make up our minds'' about whether he should be added to the roster, Paiement said.
The Express plays at Erie at 7 p.m. today and returns home to play Raleigh at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
