WARM UP A COLD DAY WITH HOT, BUTTERY ROLLS

What could be better than walking into the kitchen on a cool fall day and breathing in the aroma of freshly baked bread? Here's a recipe from Margie Pugh of Christiansburg for melt-in-your-mouth rolls that are guaranteed to make your house redolent of hot, buttery loaves. Pugh bakes these for bake sales, get-togethers and for her family.

PULL-APART ROLLS

These rolls acquire their unusual appearance from the baking pan - the bottom half of an old fashioned two-piece ice tray. If all of your ice trays are the newfangled plastic kind, you can use loaf pans or a 9-by-11-inch cake pan.

Ingredients

1 egg, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 package. yeast, 1/2 cup very warm water, 1/2 cup liquid shortening, 6 cups plain flour, 1 tablespoon salt, 1 stick butter

Instructions

In a small bowl, beat egg, then add sugar and yeast. In separate container, combine water and liquid shortening. Add water and oil to egg mixture and stir. In large bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour liquid into flour. Stir. Add more water if needed. Let rise until doubles in size. Knead dough. Melt butter in sauce pan. Pinch off egg-sized amount of dough. Roll into a length that is the width of the ice tray. Dip in butter. Place at the end of the ice tray. Repeat until tray is filled (about 10 rolls). Bake at 400, for 15-20 minutes.
