GREEN WAVE GOUGES MAROON TIDE 52-39

It was a case of turnabout fair play.

Narrows used a man-to-man defense to shut down Tammy Cox and the Maroon Tide as the Green Wave rolled to a 52-39 Mountain Empire District win and handed Galax its first loss of the season in front of a packed gym in Galax.

With the win, Narrows tied Galax in the battle for the district title. If both teams win their final game, there will be a playoff for the regular season title.

Narrows (18-1, 8-1) dominated from the start behind Melissa Lucas, who scored all 10 of her points in the first half. The Green Wave took a 27-15 halftime lead.

The Green Wave broke the game open in the third quarter behind Melissa Lawrence, who scored six of her game-high 16 points in the quarter, and the Green Wave defense held Galax (19-1, 8-1) to just three points in the quarter. The Maroon Tide did not score in the second half until 1:18 was left in the quarter on a Keisha Ayers' free throw and trailed 42-18 at the end of the quarter.

``We weren't in it [the game] from the get-go," Galax head coach Ken Ross said.

``The girls got caught up in all the hoopla and forgot about the game. It was just a bad game. It happens."

Narrows held Cox to just eight points and she was the Maroon Tide's leading scorer despite fouling out. Erin Kyle, Galax's other big gun, scored just four points.

``That was the first time I've ever seen her [Cox] out of a game," Ross said. ``Maybe this will do us a lot of good and get our heads back to where they need to be."

Suzanne Webb added 14 points for Narrows.

``The same thing happened to them that happened to us last week," Narrows coach Todd Lusk said, referring to Galax's 66-54 win in Narrows. They played with so much emotion and it threw their shooting off, but give credit to our defense. We held them all night."

Covington 46, Craig County 29: Joann Helton scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half as Covington jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and cruised to the Pioneer District win over Craig County (1-17, 1-12) in New Castle.

Tuesday's games

Glenvar 86, Highland 29: Glenvar (14-6 overall, 11-0) clinched the Pioneer District title with an easy victory at Highland (1-14, 1-10).
