Road contracts
CHRISTIANSBURG - Contracts for improving roads and bridges in the Virginia Department of Transportation's Salem District have been awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The district includes Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties, as well as the cities within them.
Raised pavement markers over which snowplows can travel will be installed throughout the district. In Christiansburg, Depot Street will be extended from North Franklin Street (U.S. 460) to West Main Street (Virginia 8). The nearly 3/4-mile project includes installation of a box culvert for drainage, utility work, grading, paving and traffic signals.
In Pulaski County, about a quarter mile of Virginia 845 will be widened and paved. The work will start at Virginia 643 and extend to the dead end. Work on projects will begin in December. Motorists should use caution when driving through highway work zones and heed signs and flaggers.
Convictions for speeding through work zones can result in fines of up to $250.
