DeFRIECE, Reece Houston, 80, of Marion, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Marie Hutton DeFriece. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Regina Griffitts, Marion, Mrs. Patricia Shores, Seven Mile Ford; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Betty McKinney and Mrs. Wanda Lyons, Mt. Airy, N.C.; one son, James Clifton DeFriece, Ridgeway; five grandchildren, and 12 step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Marion Boggs and the Rev. Tim Boyette officiating. Burial will follow in Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home.

BAGLEY, Pattie Connelly, (Patsy), 72, of Kenbridge, died October 31, 1995. A loving wife and mother, she is survived by her husband, Edward Garland Bagley, Jr.; a daughter, Sudie Bagley Heartwell of Fincastle; a son, Captain Edward G. Bagley, III, USN of Naples, Italy; and a daughter, Pattie Bagley Schutte, of Kahoka, Missouri; three grandchildren, Cara Beatrice Bagley, Jessica Margaret Bagley, and Robert Edward Schutte; and a treasured ex-daughter-in-law, Gillian Cullen Bagley. She is also survived by a sister, Judy Connelly Coslett of Media, Pa. and a brother, Lewis Branch Connelly, III of Kingsport, Tenn. Mrs. Bagley was a graduate of Longwood College, an active member and elder of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and a charter board member of the Ripberger Memorial Library. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 3, 1995, at 11 a.m. at the Kenbridge Cemetery. Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge in charge of services. BECKNER, Stephen Douglas, 39, of Salem, died Tuesday, October 31, 1995. Bethel Baptist Church was his church family. Survivors include his parents, James E. and Polly Old Beckner, Salem; maternal grandmother, Rena Old; paternal grandmother, Ruby Beckner, both of Salem; one sister, Sheila Beckner, Salem; three brothers, David Beckner, Tony Beckner, both of Roanoke and John Beckner, Durham, N.C.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday, November 3, 1995, in the John M. Oakey & Son Salem Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R. Stuart Carlton officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.

CLOWERS, Samuel David, 45, of Dry Fork, Va., died early Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in the Veterans Administration Health Care Center in Roanoke. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of VFW Post #325 of Danville, Va. Surviving are one son, Stephen D. Clowers of Richmond; his mother June S. Jones of Roanoke; a sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda B. and George Pierce, II of Roanoke; a niece, Ashley Bland, Roanoke; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Chapel in Christiansburg, conducted by the Rev. Richard H. Horne with burial in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. GRAHAM, Edith Wohlford, 82, of Charlottesville and Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 1995. GRANT, M. Ray, 67, of Roanoke, whom was deeply loved and much respected, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 1995. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was a retired service writer from West Motors, and previously had been the service manager at Fulton Motor Company for 27 years. Mr. Grant loved life, loved people and was generous and kind. We know he will live on in the heart and memories of those who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Lusk Grant and a son, Ronald R. Grant. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Rick Patterson Sr., Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur L. and Faye Grant, Dunn, N.C.; grandchildren, Beth A. McCORMACK, Elsie Reynolds, 93, of Franklin, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. She was a loving mother and grandmother. A native of Marmet, W.Va., she was the daugher of John Berne and Roberta Salmons Reynolds and the widow of Herbert E. McCormack Sr. Mrs. McCormack attended high school at Lewisburg Seminary, Lewisburg, W.Va. and graduated from Morris-Harvey Col lege with a major in English and a minor in music. She taught school in W. Va. prior to moving to Roanoke, Va. in 1947, where she resided until moving to Franklin to live with her daughter. She was a former member of St. Marks Methodist Church, Charleston, W.Va., and received life membership in Women's Society of Christian Service before moving to Virginia. She was a member of Greene Memorial Methodist Church and Windsor Hill Garden Club of Roanoke, and the Ladies Golf Association, Roanoke Country Club. She is survived by a daughter, Betty McCormack Moore; three granddaughters, Katherine Moore Van Voorhis, Ocean Springs, Miss., Cynthia Reynolds Moore, Franklin, and Elizabeth McCormack Brown of Michigan; two grandsons, Steven Thomas Moore and Robert A. Moore III of Pensacola, Fla; four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, H.E. McCormack Jr. A graveside funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Sherwood Memorial Park, Roanoke. MILLS, Fred W. Sr., 82, of Vinton, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995. He was retired from Grand Piano Company, and was pre-deceased by two sons, Fred W. Mills Jr., and Charles W. Mills. Surviving are his wife, Gracie Carter Mills; daughter-in-law, Peggy J. Mills, Vinton; grandchildren, Michael T. Mills and wife, Wanda, Moneta, Jeff S. Mills and Rick L. Mills, both of Vinton; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Brandon Mills; sister, Mary M. Beard, Roanoke. MINTER, Hattie Creasey, 94, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born April 19, 1901 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Milton Creasey and Ada Creasey Creasey. Her husband was the late Garrison Minter. She was a member of the Diamond Hill Baptist Church. NEWTON, Evelyn Layne Dogan, 86, of Sweetwater, Texas, formerly of Daleville, passed away Monday, October 30, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Aubrey Dogan and J. M. Newton; sisters, Elva Viar, Christine Abbott; brother, Russel Layne; grandson, Buddy Dogan; step-daughter, Rennie Turnbull. She was a member of Daleville Church of the Brethren, and was active in the Women's Circle, the nursery, Sunday School teacher, and was also a member of the choir. She also served as a Counselor at Camp Bethel. Her other interests included raising flowers, reading and writing poetry.
