SOUTHWEST TIMES SOLD TO FLA. GROUP

For the second time in six months, The Southwest Times has a new owner.

Fackelman Newspapers of Tarpon Springs, Fla., purchased the six-day-a-week newspaper and has named a new publisher.

He is Syd Kibodeaux, who was in Pulaski as the sale was announced Thursday. Kibodeaux worked most recently as publisher of the five-day-a-week Richmond (Mo.) Daily News.

Kibodeaux said his emphasis will be on coverage of local news and issues.

The previous owner was Wayne Brockenbrough of New River Newspapers in Christiansburg. Brockenbrough, who also owns The Carroll News, a weekly newspaper in Hillsville, had bought the Southwest Times and News Messenger in Christiansburg from Worrell Enterprises Inc. in May.

The News Messenger had absorbed its sister paper, the News Journal of Radford, and cut back its publication from five to three days a week. Brockenbrough immediately re-established the News-Journal as a separate paper.

Brockenbrough still owns the News Messenger and News Journal, but the papers will be managed by Fackelman's Newspaper Service Co. Billy Smith, who had been publisher at the Southwest Times, will move to those papers.

The Fackelman group, based in southwestern Florida, owns or manages two daily newspapers in Louisiana, three dailies in Missouri, two twice-a-week papers Texas and another in Florida.

A sale price was not disclosed.
