Virginia, with 12 days to get ready for Florida State, came out in a defensive formation it had not displayed in the first nine games.
The Cavaliers used only three linemen to rush FSU quarterback Danny Kanell and frequently dropped as many as eight players into pass coverage.
Virginia did not come close to sacking Kanell on his 38 first-half attempts, but the Cavaliers did stop the Seminoles twice in the ``red zone,'' including a sack of tailback Warrick Dunn on a fourth-and-two option pass from the UVa 17.
GOLDEN ARMS
Two of the five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award were on the field Thursday night, Kanell and Virginia quarterback Mike Groh.
Other finalists for the award, which recognizes the top senior quarterback in the country are Nebraska's Tommy Frazier, Ohio State's Bobby Hoying and South Carolina's Steve Taneyhill.
JEFFERS OUT
Virginia wide receiver Patrick Jeffers was in street clothes Thursday night - less than 36 hours after UVa coach George Welsh told the media the Cavaliers had no new injuries.
Sources said Jeffers suffered a pulled hamstring Monday in practice. When Welsh was asked about injuries on a conference call Wednesday, he implied only cornerback Joe Crocker would be unable to play against the Seminoles.
PERSISTENCE
Freshman Anthony Poindexter, who already had a couple of tackles, limped off the field with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter after apparently aggravating an old groin injury.
Welsh had expressed hope during the week he would have Poindexter's services for more than a half. Poindexter's pulled groin kept him off the field for Texas' game-winning drive in a 17-16 victory over UVa.
Poindexter returned before the half and immediately made his presence felt, stopping Dunn for a 2-yard loss on a trick play that involved the Seminoles snapping the ball to the tailback.
HOMECOMING
The lone Virginian on Florida State's roster is starting free safety Sean Hamlet, a junior from Hampton. Hamlet did not dress for the Seminoles' previous game, against Georgia Tech, but put on his uniform at halftime and played after an injury to Shevin Smith.
STREAKS
A spectacular diving grab by Percy Ellsworth at the 2-yard line saved a second-half touchdown and extended UVa's streak of games with at least one interception to 26. It was Ellsworth's team-high fifth interception of the season.
NEXT OPPONENT
Virginia will visit Maryland (5-3 overall, 3-2 ACC) on Nov.11 in a game that has been rescheduled for noon for television purposes. The Terrapins, who have lost three of their past four games, visit North Carolina State on Saturday.
