TECH FORWARD INJURED AGAIN

Keefe Matthews, a key frontcourt player for the Virginia Tech men's basketball team, will miss an unspecified amount of practice time with a stress fracture in his right foot.

Matthews, a 6-foot-8 redshirt junior from Mt. Rainier, Md., has been bothered by the injury since the start of preseason workouts. Doctors decided Thursday to place the foot in a cast.

Matthews has not played since transferring to Tech in 1994 from Jacksonville (Texas) Junior College. He missed the entire 1994-95 season with a dislocated kneecap.

``Doctors tell us they are not certain how much time Keefe will miss,'' coach Bill Foster said Thursday. ``We hope to have him back in time for the start of the regular season.''

PREPS Northside's Bray wins Region III title

Northside's Stuart Bray won the Region III boys' cross country meet at Gretna to lead the Vikings to a fourth-place finish. Teammate Tommy Maguire placed ninth.

Bray completed the course in 17 minutes, 4.07 seconds, 5.49 seconds ahead of Staunton River's Brian Harlor.

Jefferson Forest won the team competition with 67 points. Brookville was second at 92 and Lord Botetourt was third at 102. Northside finished at 106.

Jeremy Bartley of Alleghany finished fifth individually, and the Mountaineers took fifth in the team competition. Salem's Christopher Barba was sixth individually and Rockbridge County's Jason Hannah was 10th. Robert and Michael Pauley, brothers from Lord Botetourt, finished 12th and 13th, respectively.

In the girls' meet, Briana Grose of William Byrd finished fourth in 21:04.52 to lead the Terriers to a fourth-place finish.

In other high school sports action:

Cave Spring's Ben Dowdy finished fourth in the Northwest Region cross country meet at Darden Towne Park in Charlottesville, qualifying for the Group AAA meet Nov.11 at Great Meadows in Warrenton.

Dowdy was the lone Timesland runner to finish in the top 35, much less qualify for the state meet. Mark Rumple of Brooke Point won the regional title, with a time of 16:54.00, 29 seconds ahead of Dowdy.

Cave Spring finished ninth, with a team total of 227, 169 points behind team titlist Woodbridge. Patrick Henry placed 11th and Franklin County 12th.

In the girls' meet, no Timesland runner qualified for the state meet. Dawn Cleary of Woodbridge claimed the individual title with a time of 19:39.

Cleary's finish, coupled with teammate Katherine McAllister's second-place effort, was enough to give Woodbridge the team title in the girls' event as well, with 52 points. Cave Spring finished ninth in the team competition and Franklin County placed 11th with 220 and 276 points, respectively.

Patrick Henry defeated Franklin County 10-15, 15-6, 15-5 to win the Roanoke Valley District volleyball title. The Patriots will play host to the loser of the Western District's final between Albemarle and GW-Danville in a Northwest Region match Wednesday. Franklin County will travel to face the winner of that contest. The Northwest Region semifinals and final are Nov.11 at a site to be determined.
