BYRD EARNS DISTRICT TIE WITH VICTORY

Kristi Dyer scored 19 points Thursday night as William Byrd earned a 60-44 victory over Alleghany in a key Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.

With the victory, Byrd tied Salem for the regular-season title and forced a playoff at 7 p.m. Monday at Lord Botetourt High School.

Cathy Smith added 10 points and 10 rebounds for William Byrd (19-2 overall, 8-2 district), which had a 38-20 advantage on the boards. Kim Kendrick had seven assists directing the Terriers' offense.

Glenvar 55, James River 36: The Highlanders took a 24-point halftime lead and cruised to a Pioneer District victory over the Knights.

Amy Layman led Glenvar (15-6, 12-0) with 15 points.

Amy Sprinkle paced James River, which saw its four-game winning streak snapped, with 12 points.

Parry McCluer 64, Craig County 19: The Fighting Blues wrapped up second place in the Pioneer District by beating the Rockets in Buena Vista.

Senior Chrystal Humphries led Parry McCluer (12-3, 9-3) with 26 points and 12 rebounds, going 10-of-20 from the floor. Lindsey Coleman and Avis Williams added 17 and 11 points, respectively.

Laura Nelson led Craig County (1-19, 1-11) with 10 points.

Northside 73, Rockbridge County 43: Rosse Hopkins and Laura Schmidt combined to score 14 of the Vikings' 20 first-quarter points, and Northside went on to avenge a loss to the visiting Wildcats in the Blue Ridge District.

Hopkins finished with a career-high 20 points and Schmidt scored 11 for the Vikings (10-11, 4-6). Amy Heath scored 13 points and Amber Kern added 12 to a balanced attack.
