Covington appeared to be in control until James River's Shahan Burrell picked up a blocked field-goal attempt and rumbled 85 yards for a touchdown to make the score 15-13.
The Cougars scored again to make it 21-13.
The Knights (7-2 overall, 3-1 district) closed to 21-19 on a 4-yard run by Burrell. The two point conversion tied the score at 21 with 55 seconds left in the game.
Covington (6-3, 3-1) won the game in overtime on a 9-yard run by Mike Barber.
Tom Luckett ran for 126 yards on 27 carries for the Cougars.
William Fleming 20, Franklin County 14: With the Roanoke Valley District title being decided elsewhere, the Colonels and Eagles played for nothing more than bragging rights. That didn't prevent a battle in Rocky Mount, where Fleming tailback Lee Suggs dived into the end zone from the 1-yard line to seal the Colonels' first district victory of the season.
On a fourth-and-three play with 4:50 remaining, Franklin County (3-7, 1-3) fumbled into the hands of the Colonels' Matt Grogan. He rumbled to the Eagles' 12, setting up Suggs' winning score.
Quarterback Grey Hodges and the Eagles' offense took over on their 35 after the ensuing kickoff with 1:35 left in the game. On first down, Franklin County ran a reverse with Steve Williamson for a 25-yard gain. Hodges then threw three consecutive incompletions, setting up a fourth-and-10 desperation pass. Defensive back Richard Wilson wouldn't let Hodges succeed, however, breaking up the pass and putting the victory on ice for Fleming.
Suggs led the Colonels (4-5, 1-2) with 99 yards on 19 carries. His touchdown, combined with Corey Poindexter's 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Wilson's 48-yard scoring reception from Charles Burnette and a safety accounted for all the Fleming scoring. Grogan and Waris Wade sacked Hodges in the end zone in the second quarter, putting the Colonels up 14-0.
Shortly thereafter, Hodges plunged in from 2 yards, putting the Eagles on the board. In the third period, he connected with Henry Eggleston for an 85-yard touchdown pass as Franklin County tied the score at 14 heading into the fourth quarter. Hodges completed only three of his 16 attempts for 98 yards. Eagles tailback Brandon Smith rushed 11 times for 93 yards.
Bland County 30, Fort Chiswell 7: The Bears used 339 yards of total offense to defeat the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game in Fort Chiswell.
Bland County (7-2, 3-1) was led by Todd Morehead, who surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in rushing during the first quarter. The Bears did the majority of their damage in the first half, amassing 261 yards.
Ernest Viars led the Pioneers (4-5, 1-2) with 71 yards rushing, 41 of those on a first-quarter touchdown burst.
George Wythe 41, Northwood 7: Jason Smith, a senior starting his 10th and final game, broke the 1,000-yard rushing mark and the hearts of the Panthers as the Maroons downed Wythe in Wytheville.
Smith had 178 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries in the Hogoheegee District matchup. In his first and only season as a starter, Smith finished with 1,028 yards on the ground.
The game also was highlighted by a 76-yard interception return by Wythe's Freddy Moses.
Ricky Moore had four carries for 44 yards to lead Northwood (0-9, 0-7).
The Maroons closed their season with a 5-5 record overally, 4-3 in the district.
William Campbell 47, Staunton River 0: The Generals marched to 33 points in the first quarter and went on to steamroll the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game in Moneta.
Robbie Mason ran for 94 yards and Marco Pannell rushed for 81 and three touchdowns as William Campbell improved its record to 9-0 in the league and overall.
Staunton River, which managed 158 yards total offense, is 4-5 in the league and overall.
Glenvar 20, Shawsville 0: Two quick third-quarter touchdowns took the pressure off the Highlanders as they downed the Shawnees in a non-district matchup at Glenvar's field.
After Corey Willis hit Don Elliott with a 36-yard scoring strike midway through the period, Tyler Brown recovered a fumble to give the Highlanders (4-5) the ball again. This time, Willis hit Perry Taylor for 16 yards and another score.
Willis completed five of eight passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns. The Shawnees' Chris Graham connected on 14 of 25 passes for 52 yards.
Lyn Twine led Glenvar with 55 yards rushing on 10 carries. Ronnie Fendlay had 44 on 12 attempts for Shawsville (2-7).
Galax 30, Narrows 8: After trailing early, the Maroon Tide swamped the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game in Galax.
The Maroon Tide (2-7, 1-3) was led by Rodney Sawyers, who carried 17 times for 174 yards. Jason Hancock ran six times and collected 80 yards and a touchdown.
Narrows (2-7, 0-3) had a total of 222 yards to 378 for Galax. The Green Wave was led by David Turner, who rushed for 127 yards on 15 carries.
Radford 49, Floyd County 12: The Bobcats took advantage of five Buffaloes turnovers to bolt to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruise to the Three Rivers District victory in Radford.
The Bobcats (7-2, 2-1) rolled up 282 yards rushing - Eddie Waldron led the way with 91 on seven carries - and 347 total yards. Derrick Chapman caught two touchdown passes for Radford.
The Bobcats' defense held Floyd County (1-8, 0-4) to minus-11 yards rushing and 73 total yards.
Blacksburg 31, Carroll County 7: Brothers Tucker and Tommy LaForce combined for three touchdowns as the Indians downed the Cavaliers in a New River District contest in Hillsville.
Tucker LaForce had 12 carries for 84 yards and two touchdowns, one on a 37-yard run and another on a 1-yarder. Tommy LaForce completed seven of 14 passes for 88 yards and ran for a 1-yard touchdown.
Blacksburg (4-5, 1-1) finished with 159 yards rushing while holding Carroll County (3-7, 0-2) to 85 yards.
Jason McMillian ran 2 yards for Carroll County's lone touchdown.
Liberty 43, Rustburg 7: Gregg Reynolds scored two touchdowns on pass receptions, and Marvin Harris rushed eight times for 67 yards and another score as the Minutemen rolled over the Devils in a Seminole District game in Bedford.
Liberty (8-1, 8-1) secured the winningest season in school history by scoring two touchdowns in the opening quarter.
Harris scored on a 4-yard run and Ryan Stevens added a 1-yard scamper to give the Minutemen a 14-0 lead. Reynolds caught touchdown passes of 21 and 26 yards from senior J.J. Coles in the second quarter.
Coles finished with 111 yards on 5-of-8 passing. Harris, a senior, rushed eight times for a team-high 67 yards.
Rustburg fell to (4-5, 4-5).
Bath County 34, Parry McCluer 8: The Chargers were nearly perfect in all facets of the game in their Pioneer District victory over the Fighting Blues in Lexington.
Bath County (7-2, 4-0) maintained a balanced running attack with Jamie Carroll rushing 16 times for 89 yards and Brandon Woodward rushing five times for 80 yards. Bath had 392 yards of total offense and held Parry McCluer (4-5, 2-3) to 151.
Giles 53, Grayson County 16: Kevin Slusser scored four touchdowns and ran 14 times for 220 yards to lead the Spartans to a non-district victory over the Blue Devils in Pearisburg.
Giles (8-1) rolled up 446 total yards on offense as it scored easily and often.
Brandon Steele and Slusser scored on 72- and 2-yard runs, respectively, to open the scoring. Anthony Myers' 29 yard pass reception and a two-point conversion staked the Spartans to a 22-0 lead.
Grayson County (4-5) responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter, including Chad McMillan's 53-yard scamper, but the Blue Devils couldn't keep pace.
Slusser scored again on runs of 2, 42 and 65 yards as Giles sealed the outcome.
McMillan finished with 95 yards on nine carries for Grayson County. Brandon Steele led Giles with 12 tackles.
Lebanon 27, Rural Retreat 12: Two big plays with five minutes left propelled the Pioneers to a victory over the Indians and the Hogoheegee District title.
With Rural Retreat trailing 14-12 and driving, Lebanon's Gordon Holmes intercepted a screen pass in the Indians' backfield and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown.
Soon after, Kevin Coleman gave the Pioneers an insurance touchdown with a 38-yard scoring run.
Rural Retreat actually outgained Lebanon 273 yards to 248. Archie Arnold ran 16 times for 101 yards for the Indians (6-3, 5-2). Coleman had 99 yards on five carries, and Holmes had 86 on 12 attempts for the Pioneers (8-1, 7-0).
