Northside defeated New River District champion and playoff bound Christiansburg 20-0 Friday in a non-district game at Northside Stadium.
Northside (5-4) continues its tour of VHSL playoff qualifiers next week against Blue Ridge District rival Salem.
"We got off to an inauspicious start this season with a couple of poor games,'' Vikings coach Jim Hickam said. "We set a goal after those games to win five games this season.''
Hickam's troops reached their goal on the strong legs of senior tailback Mike Bullock, who tallied 146 yards on 19 carries.
"This win was special for me,'' Bullock said. "It was my last home game and after we started off the season bad, it was good to get it going tonight.''
Bullock and running mate Dee Shovely led the ground assault for the Vikings early in the second half.
On Northside's third play from scrimmage in the second half, Shovely shook two tackles and sprinted 87 yards down the sideline for a touchdown.
The score gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead with 7:47 remaining in the third quarter.
"I had to change directions a couple of times behind the line of scrimmage,'' Shovely said. "Then I found a hole and took it the rest of the way.''
The Vikings' very next play from scrimmage was a 65-yard dash by Bullock to the Blue Demons 5. Halfback John Doss scored three plays later, pushing the lead to 14-0.
Northside tacked on its final touchdown with 8:42 left in the game when Bullock scored on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line.
