CHAMBER HONORS PULASKI COUNTY CITIZENS

Retired teacher Elrica Graham and Pulaski County Administrator Joe Morgan were among those recognized at the county Chamber of Commerce awards banquet at New River Community College Thursday night.

Graham, the wife of Pulaski Mayor Andy Graham, received the 1995 Southwest Times Civic Honors Award for her work on establishing heritage and geological exhibits in the county's rebuilt Old Courthouse, her visits to schools and other groups as she continues to teach the county's historic background, and her church work.

Morgan received a special award for his help in the county's economic growth.

Incoming Chamber President Chris Dux said Morgan helped organize the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance, retain the Volvo-GM plant in Pulaski County and has been instrumental in the addition or expansion of other industries, while working behind the scenes in such areas as cooking barbecue for civic gatherings and cleaning up afterward.

The 1995 Medical Volunteer Award went to Dr. Jack Knarr for helping organize the Pulaski Free Clinic. Knarr, soon to be chief of the medical staff at Pulaski Community Hospital, was not present to receive his award because he was attending a meeting of the Medical Society of Virginia.

The 1995 Chamber Excellence Award went to Joe Bane of Heilig-Meyers Furniture, whose work and transportation of auction items helped the chamber's fund-raising auction this year.

New officers in addition to Dux include Bane as vice president for community development, Billy Smith as vice president for community development, and Dan Grubb, vice president for internal affairs. Sue Berkely becomes immediate past president, and Dublin Town Manager Gary Elander president-elect for 1997.

Berkely went over some of the chamber accomplishments of 1995 including the move of its offices from the Pulaski Municipal Building to the town's renovated Train Station building where, she said, walk-in traffic has greatly increased and tourism traffic has doubled.
