W&L WINS ODAC TITLE IN VOLLEYBALL

Top-seeded Washington and Lee won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Saturday by sweeping Roanoke College in Greensboro, N.C.

The Generals (29-6) claimed their first ODAC volleyball championship with scores of 15-4, 15-13, 15-8. W&L reached the final with a 3-2 victory over tournament host Guilford.

Generals setter Cheryl Taurassi was named the tournament's most valuable player, and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Virginia Yoerg and Hilary Martin and Roanoke's Crystal Wilson.

In other college sports in the region:

The Lynchburg College women's team and the Washington and Lee men's team were victorious in the ODAC cross country championships at Roanoke College.

In the women's division, W&L's Josephine Schaeffer took first place with a time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds, beating second-place Hannah Howe of Lynchburg by more than one minute. Lynchburg edged the Generals for the team title 26-37.

In the men's division, W&L's Jason Callen won individual honors with a time of 26:32, crossing the line 13 seconds before J.J. Maybury of Roanoke College. The Generals finished with a total of 36 points, beating Roanoke by 25.

Junior forward Mike Fisher and sophomore midfielder Billy Walsh scored in the final five minutes, lifting top-ranked Virginia to a 2-1 victory over George Mason in Charlottesville and giving the Cavaliers their second unbeaten regular season in men's soccer.

Virginia (16-0-2) is unbeaten in its past 28 games, the second longest streak in ACC history behind UVa's 32-game run spanning the 1992 and '93 seasons. George Mason is 10-5-3.

The Cavaliers are seeded No.1 in the ACC Tournament, which will be played Thursday through Nov.12 in Durham, N.C., and will receive a bye in the first round. They will meet the Duke-Wake Forest winner at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Three free throws by Jim Jackson with five seconds left enabled the White team to tie the Maroon at 66 in Virginia Tech's annual intrasquad men's basketball scrimmage in Blacksburg.

A crowd of 6,500 watched junior Ace Custis score 24 points and grab six rebounds for the Maroon squad. Travis Jackson added 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Shawn Smith led the White team with 14 points and freshman Alvaro Tor had 10 rebounds.

Freshman Aaron Marchetti continued his winning ways for Virginia Tech at the Rolex Eastern Regionals tennis tournament in Princeton, N.J.

Marchetti, coming off two victories Friday, won two more singles matches to advance to a quarterfinal today. He also combined with Oliver Mayo to advance to the third round today in doubles.

Mayo won two matches to advance to the fourth round today in singles.

Averett College defeated Ferrum 6-15, 15-13, 15-11, 15-9 to win the Dixie Conference volleyball tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Averett defeated Christopher Newport 3-0 to reach the final, while Ferrum defeated Greensboro 3-0.

The Honors Committee of the VMI Sports Hall of Fame inducted five former Keydets in ceremonies at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

In the category of ``Special Citation,'' former equipment manager Henry Johnson was inducted posthumously.

Sylvester Davis (Class of '85) and Henry Sanchez ('85) were inducted for track and field; Gary Moore ('81) for soccer; Curtis Reppart ('76) for basketball; and Bobby Ross ('59) for football and baseball.

HIGH SCHOOL Bath, Floyd run to titles

The girls' team from Bath County and the boys' team from Floyd County won titles at the Region C cross country meet in Galax.

In the boys' race, Ben Cooke of Floyd County won with a time of 16:27, beating second-place Brent Young of Covington by 12 seconds. The Buffaloes took the team trophy with the top three schools separated by eight points. Galax finished second to Floyd with 63 points, and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring (67) took third.

In the girls' race, Trish Nervo of Glenvar dusted the field, finishing with a course-record time of 18:13 nearly two minutes better than Johanna Neumann of Floyd County, who finished in 20:07. Bath County took the team crown with a score of 48 points. Giles finished second, 19 points back.
