OFFICER KILLED WHEN HIT BY CAR

A Chesapeake police officer was killed early Saturday morning when he was struck by a car.

Officer Daniel Eugene Eaker was killed around 5 a.m. when he stepped away from a tractor-trailer and into the path of an oncoming car, according to police spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones.

Eaker, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene. The car that struck Eaker went into a ditch, and the driver, William Taylor, 66, was hurt. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Taylor was not charged. "It was just an accident," Jones said.
