DEMONS FLATTEN BYRD

Christiansburg High School utilized a career night from its star running back and three William Byrd turnovers in posting a 28-7 non-district victory Friday.

Both teams are playoff bound.

Christiansburg (5-5) will play host to Graham on Nov.17 in the first round of the Region 4, Division III playoffs.

The Terriers (8-2) still are in the Region 3, Division IV playoffs because Patrick County lost to Magna Vista on Friday. Byrd will play at Salem on Nov.17. The Terriers lost 35-3 to Salem in the regular season.

The Blue Demons scored the first 21 points off Terrier fumbles.

Christiansburg tailback Mike Scott led the rushing attack with 207 yards on 36 carries. Scott entered the game needing 192 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

``Getting 192 yards was a goal for me coming into the game,'' Scott said. ``I just got some great blocking all night. I never dreamed that I would get 1,000 yards in any season.''

In addition to his hefty yardage total, Scott scored touchdowns on runs of 5, 3 and 46 yards for the Blue Demons.

With 2:57 remaining in the third quarter, Scott sprinted 46 yards down the left sideline for a Christiansburg score, giving his team a 28-0 lead.

``I just followed Larry Carter all the way down the sideline on that one,'' Scott said. ``He did a great job of blocking for me.''

Blue Demons coach Mike Cole said Scott's 207-yard performance was the junior tailback's best performance.

``Mike is running very well for us now,'' Cole said. ``He's reading the holes and his blocking very well. When he gets his shoulders squared to the line, he's very tough.''

The Christiansburg offense took advantage of two William Byrd fumbles to build a 14-0 halftime lead.

The Blue Demons scored first on a 5-yard touchdown plunge by Scott with 8:32 remaining in the second quarter.

Christiansburg's score was set up four plays earlier when the defense recovered a fumble by William Byrd quarterback Frank English.

The second Terrier turnover proved to be a back-breaker for the visitors. William Byrd fullback Jonathan Hartsock fumbled a handoff with 50 seconds remaining in the opening half, and Christiansburg recovered the ball at the Byrd 28.

Three plays later, Blue Demons quarterback Chris Epperly connected with wide receiver Ricky Williams for a 23-yard touchdown pass with :05 left in the half.

The Terriers scored their only touchdown on a 1-yard plunge by English. The quarterback finished with 57 yard rushing, but he was sacked eight times by the Blue Demons defense.

``We tried to contain [English] tonight,'' Christiansburg defensive tackle Rocky Gravely said. ``We knew that he was a good runner, so we rushed him from the outside.

``Tonight was one of the best defensive efforts of the season for us. We've been ready since Monday for this game.''
