Frank Smith, executive vice president of the company, said new mines that are opening will supply coal to Coastal's Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Co. subsidiary's Toms Creek operation in Wise County.
The mines will be producing a superior quality, highly volatile coal, which the company will bring to market in early 1996, he said.
The Toms Creek operation, on a Norfolk Southern rail line, currently processes 3.1 million tons of coal a year. Smith could not say what the increase in production at Toms Creek would be or how many additional jobs will be created by the expansion.
Coastal Coal Sales - a subsidiary of ANR Coal Co. also of Roanoke and its parent, the Coastal Corp. of Houston - markets coal produced by Coastal and other companies.
As part of the expansion, the company named Steven L. MacNeil as vice president for export and metallurgical sales. MacNeil, a Virginia Tech graduate, rejoins Coastal after a six-year absence and will be responsible for domestic and export metallurgical markets. Metallurgical coal is used to make coke, a product used to make steel.
MacNeil, 38, first joined Coastal in 1980 but moved to the Island Creek Co. in 1989 and formed his own company two years ago. He lives and works in Lexington, Ky.
Coastal Coal Sales also announced this week the promotion of Gene E. McBurney Jr. as manager of sales.
McBurney, formerly a district sales manager in the Southeast, now is responsible for marketing steam and industrial coals in the eastern United States from Coastal's Eastern and Western coal operations. McBurney, 46, is a graduate of the University of Mississippi. He lives in Roanoke.
