The authority has completed the model home for its Homeownership Opportunities Program and will show off the house at 629 Queen Ave. N.W. to the public from 2 p.m to 5 p.m.
The program is a $1 million effort to meet the city's needs for affordable housing. A number of sites are available for construction of these homes, and the authority plans to build them throughout the Roanoke Valley.
To be eligible to purchase one of the houses, a family must have an annual income of at least $18,000 but not more than $31,850 for four people, $34,400 for five people or $36,950 for six people. Applicants must also be able to obtain their own financing.
"Our goal is to provide low- to moderate-income individuals with an attractive and affordable new home," Wesley White, authority director of development, said. "This program gives individuals the chance to customize their home according to their desires, while being able to purchase the home at a reasonable price."
The homes will be architecturally designed, energy efficient and easy to maintain. In addition to standard features such as 11/2 baths, washer-dryer hookups and landscaped yards, each of the 1,100 to 1,200 square foot homes will be customized to meet the needs and wants of the buyer. Several floor plans are available, and families may choose options such as a deck or porch; carpet and paint colors; floor coverings; and cabinet styles.
The model home with all its features has an estimated price of $67,000.
