MILLER, Hallie Merritt Guthrie, 87, of 8359 Holland Road, Copper Hill, died Saturday afternoon, November 11, 1995, in the Richfield Nursing Home in Salem. Born in Halifax County, Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late John Joseph and Jennie Wembush Guthrie. She moved to Durham, N.C., in 1920, and resided there until moving to Copper Hill in July of 1991. She was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Durham. Mrs. Miller's husband, William J. Miller, died in 1992. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hall-Wynne Funeral Chapel, Durham, with the Rev. Scott Benhase officiating. Private burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte M. Womack of Durham; two sons, William J. Miller Jr. and wife Judy of Copper Hill, and the Rev. Joseph H. Miller and wife Susan of Marion, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Deborah W. Combs and Stephen Womack, both of Durham, Eli Williams of Salem, John D. Miller of Barnwell, S.C., Kelli Miller Nichols of Harrisonburg, and Laura Miller and Rebecca Miller, both of Marion; five great-grandchildren, Katie Williams and Shaun Williams, both of Salem, Zack Miller and Hannah Miller, both of Barnwell, S.C., and Kathryn Womack of Hillsborough, N.C., and three sisters, Verona G. Loftis and Helen G. Stone, both of Durham, and Alverta G. McPherson of Newport, R.I. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Miller was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Watkins and Eleanor Lee, and by two brothers, Felix Guthrie and Marvin Guthrie. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley, 1901 Roanoke Blvd., Salem, Va. 24153, or to St. Philip's Episcopal Chur ch, 403 East Main Street, Durham, N.C. 27701.
ALLEN, Alphonso, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, November 11, 1995. He was born in Bedford to the late Henry and Lelia Allen. He attended school in Bedford and served his country as a sergeant in the Army during WW II. He was a kind and loving person and always ready and willing to help someone. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lucian Allen. Survivors include his wife, Fannie Allen, Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Siberia and John Brown, Washington D.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Gloria Allen; a nephew who cared for him, Rudy Allen, Roanoke; other nephew and niece, Timothy Allen and Renee Roper all of Roanoke; a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Williams Memorial Park. ALTICE, Everette Lee, 89, of Orchard Ave., Rocky Mount, died Sunday morning, November 12, 1995 at Franklin Health Care Center. Surviving are her husband, Claudie Noell Altice of the home; two sisters, Angie Altice and Gracie Altice both of Glade Hill; several nieces and nephews; a good friend, Vikki Patton. DEACON, Devin Scott, 19, of Fairfield, died Sunday, November 12, 1995, at his home. Mr. Deac on was born April 8, 1976, in Rockbridge County, a son of Brenda Deacon Smith of Fairfield and the late Whitmore Stuart Deacon. He was a member of the Timber Ridge (Old Stone) Presbyterian Church and the Fairfield Fire Department. Devin was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Odell Deacon. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Harry T. Smith of Fairfield; three brothers, Ricky Stuart Deacon, Douglas Steele Deacon and Donald Whitmore Deacon, all of Fairfield; one sister, Bridgett Deacon Sensabaugh of Fairfield, and his grandmothers, Mary Virginia Hartless of Fairfield and Lydia Deacon of Lexington. PAITSEL, William G. (``Bill""), 42, of Vinton, passed away suddenly Sunday, November 12, 1995, in a local hospital. He was a disabled U. S. Air Force veteran. PERDUE, Lena Brown, 75, of Route 3, Glade Hill, died Saturday, November 11, 1995 after many years of suffering. Mrs. Perdue ran Perdue's Antiques in Glade Hill for many years and will be missed by her many friends in the antique world. Lena leaves behind her devoted husband of 47 years, Benjamin Perdue, Glade Hill; two very devoted nieces and their families, Donna B. Wilkes, Rocky Mount, Patricia B. Prillaman, Snow Creek; a special nephew, Jimmy Arrington; very close friend, Tessie Perdue. Lena is also survived by several sisters-in-law and their families, Virginia Perdue, Ila P. Shepherd, Nannie P. Brown and Elsie Brown; sisters, Hattie B. Merriman and Zula B. Robertson. Lena leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends.
