POTENTIAL MARROW DONORS TO BE SCREENED WEDNESDAY

People who would like to be bone marrow donors are invited to a transplant screening in Radford University 's Heth Ballroom Wednesday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

People in good health between 18 and 55 are needed. During the 15-minute screening, a small amount of blood is taken and tested. Radford Community Hospital Auxiliary will donate the $22.50 testing fee for the first 88 donors, and anyone who has given blood five times since January will get a free test. Minorities, who are in great demand, also will be tested free.

The odds of a donor being a suitable match for someone are difficult to predict, said Betty Hall, auxiliary president. But often when a donor is found, he or she is the patient's only match. Each year, more than 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with leukemia and other blood diseases; for many, a marrow transplant is their only option.

For reservations, call Radford Community Hospital's public affairs department at 731-2380. Tax-deductible contributions of money also are welcome.
