Carr has led the Wolverines to an 8-2 record so far. They have been as high as fifth in the weekly poll. The Wolverines are No. 12 this week with two games remaining, at Penn State and against traditional rival Ohio State.
Athletic director Joe Roberson said he decided to make his announcement now because he has been impressed with the way Carr has handled the Wolverines.
``Winning is very important,'' Roberson said. ``But it's the characteristics that lead to winning and losing. If we have leadership like I've seen, we'll win.''
Carr took over for Gary Moeller, who resigned before the season after a publicized drinking incident in a Detroit restaurant.
Auto racer Richard Petty apparently is ready to take a turn on the political track.
Petty has sent out a fund-raising letter to supporters asking them to help finance a run for the North Carolina secretary of state's office, WRAL-TV reported.
Petty has been active in Republican Party politics and at one time was considering a bid for governor. He served 16 years as a county commissioner in Randolph County, N.C., and formed a political action committee two years ago to help conservative Republicans in legislative races.
