Kroger, union meet Wednesday
Although The Kroger Co. faces the possibility of a strike tonight by its Roanoke County warehouse employees and the drivers who deliver food to 60 stores in Virginia and nearby states, the two sides have agreed to a meeting Wednesday.
"We are hopeful and working diligently to avert" a strike, Kroger spokesman Archie Fralin said Monday.
Approximately 300 employees have been working under a contract that expired in February 1994.

Va. coal mines' production dips
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production totaled 19.8 million tons during the week ending Nov. 4, up 4 percent from the 19.2 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.
Virginia mines produced 709,000 tons during the survey week, down from 731,000 tons in the corresponding week of 1994. So far this year, Virginia mines have produced 30,205,000 tons, compared with 31,824,000 tons a year earlier, the Energy Department said.

Bankruptcies
Five bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia in Roanoke. Two of them are personal bankruptcies that the court listed as businesses because they have commercial connections and could be of interest to business creditors and customers.
Mullins Inc. of Richlands, owner of Mullins Towne Center, filed for reorganization and protection from creditors. The company estimated assets at more than $1 million and liabilities at less than $50,000.
William Kent Ison of Pound, an officer and stockholder of Ison Coal Co., filed for reorganization and protection from creditors. He listed assets at $512,060 and liabilities at $5,924,954.
Edward Gibbs Tarr Jr. and Michelle Bush Tarr of Castlewood filed for liquidation with assets of $122,769 and liabilities of $228,132. Edward Tarr does business as Sam's Masonry Co.
Jefferson Scott Amos of Boones Mill filed for liquidation, listing assets of $1,302 and liabilities of $16,633. He is a self-employed landscaper.
Timothy Wayne McKinney and Suzanne Michelle McKinney of Buchanan filed for liquidation, giving their assets as $18,355 and liabilities as $19,656. Timothy McKinney is a breeder of Rottweilers.
