HELMS ASKS CONGRESS TO HELP BLOCK PIPELINE

Sen. Jesse Helms tried to draw Congress into the Lake Gaston pipeline controversy on Wednesday, asking the legislature to help block Virginia Beach's efforts to tap into the enormous lake's water supply.

Helms and fellow North Carolina Republican, Sen. Lauch Faircloth, introduced a bill saying that North Carolina Gov. Jim Hunt must find that the project poses no threat to the economy or environment before it proceeds.

Sens. John Warner and Charles Robb of Virginia and Rep. Owen Pickett, D-Virginia Beach, said they doubt Congress will consider the bill.

``We will carefully watch out for any attempts to move this legislation and will stand together in opposition,'' they said in a joint statement.
