WHITESIDE, Albert Thomas, 78, of Vesuvius, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 17, 1995 at 7:45 a.m. He was born on June 15, 1917 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Norvel Lee Whiteside and May (Shephard) Whiteside. Mr. Whiteside retired from the Augusta Cooperative Farm Bureau, Fairfield, and was a farmer. He was a member of the Vesuvius Baptist Church and actively attended Emory United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn (Clements) Whiteside; four daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne W. Hoel, Roanoke, Ramona and Sam Topping, Fairfield, Teresa and Richard Fisk, Raphine, Angela and Buddy Waymack, Vesuvius; two sisters, Josephine W. Wills, Suffolk, Katherine W. Smith, Raphine; special nephew, Herbert Lee Whiteside Jr., Ellicott City, Maryland; and god-child, Thomas L. Whiteside, Manassas; another niece and nephew, Eleanor S. Mackey, Waynesboro, Russell B. Smith Jr., Phillipsburg, Montana. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Whiteside was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Lee Whiteside, an infant son and son-in-law, E. (Bill) Hoel. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m Sunday, November 19, 1995, in the Williams Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. R. Douglas Gunsalus and the Rev. Dan Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in Neriah Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Emory United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 513, Vesuvius or Fairfield First Aid Crew. ADAMS-SMITH, Jean Arnold, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, November 16, 1995, following a brief illness. She was born in Glenville, W.Va. July 7, 1931, the daughter of the late Simon Miller Arnold and Eva Nicholson Arnold. She graduated from Glenville High School, Glenville State College, and West Virginia University. She is survived by her husband, David William Smith; daughter, Peggy Sue Plum; grandchildren, Shannon, Adam, and Matt; brother, Robert D. Arnold, Glenville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Arnold Deal. She resided in Blacksburg with her husband, David William Smith, and granddaughter, Shannon M. Plum. She retired from Glenville State College in 1984, after a lifetime of teaching in public education. Jean will be remembered for her many kindnesses and her dedication to children. Family visitation will be held at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Hall, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 1995. A visitation will also be held on November 19, 1995 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ellyson Mortuary in Glenville, W.Va. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, November 20, 1995, at Stalnaker Cemetery, Glenville, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society or the Jean Adams-Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund to be established at Glenville State College. BARKER, Rudolph Lewis, 72, of 528 East Main St., Dublin, died Thursday, November 16, 1995. Born in Ft. Meade, Fla., November 18, 1922, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Barker and Ida Lightsey Barker. He grew up in Tampa, Fla. He graduated from University of Tampa in 1943. He served in the Eighth Air Force in Europe during WW II. He was a resident of Dublin since 1964, and was active in community and civic affairs. He retired in 1990 from Defense Contract Audit Agency after 30 years as a government auditor, based at Radford Arsenal. He is survived by his wife, Constance M. Boddington Barker, Dublin; two daughters, Heather A. Barker - Church, Atlanta, Ga., Gillian V. B. Dickerson, Christiansburg; one son, Ian L. Barker, Atlanta, Ga.; also surviving are sons-in-law, Alonzo Church III, Atlanta, Ga., T. Gary Dickerson, Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Cameron D. Dickerson and Adrienne B. Dickerson, Christiansburg; one brother, L. Nelson Barker, Land O' Lakes, Fla. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Mausoleum in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, Va., with Dr. Manson B. Tate officiating. CROMER, Geraldine Jeanettie, 50, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, November 16,1995 at Duke University. Born in Pulaski County, Va. on August 27,1945, she was the daughter of the late James Paul Alley and is survived by her mother, Lennie H. Alley, Dublin. Also surviving are her husband, Harvey E. FRIES, Paul William, 87, of Roanoke, died Thursday, November 16, 1995 at the Virginia Veteran Care Center. He was born in Willard, Ohio in 1908. A graduate of Dennison University, Class of 1930, Granville, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Jr. Grade from 1944 - 1946, and also in the Reserves. He was employed by Hende and Dauch Paper Company, which became part of Wesvaco, and Mr. Fries retired in 1969. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Hurst Fries on September 9, 1987. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Fries and Phillip Barton, Roanoke, and Sally Fries and Tom Davidson, Key Largo, Fla. and Toronto, Canada; granddaughter, Stacey Barton Kelly and husband, Luke, Atlanta, Ga.; grandson, Jeff Barton, Roanoke, Va.; grandson, Tom Davidson Jr. and his wife, Patty, Toronto, Canada; grandson, John Davidson and wife, Michelle, Miami, Fla.; grandson, James Davidson and wife, Tracy, Morristown, N.J.; granddaughter, Jennifer Davidson, Miami, Fla.; great-granddaughters, Kelley and Christi Davidson, Toronto, Canada; many special friends at the Virginia Veterans Care Center. HUTTON, Miss Ora Vivian, 86, died Friday, November 17, 1995, in the Roanoke City Nursing Home. Born in West Virginia on July 18, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Irving Layton and Lorena Lutiticia Sears Layton. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jesse James Bobbitt on February 2, 1995. PRICE, Mary Ellen, 56, of Riner, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 1995 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freel Price. She was a retired employee of The Don Kenny Corp. She is survived by a half sister, Dorothy Stevenson, Pittsburgh, Pa.; adopted daughter, Deborah Callaway, Radford; niece and nephew, Detra and H. R. TRIVETT, Hayden Christeele Frazier, (``Chris''), 70, of Route 3, Box 463, Pulaski, died Thursday night, November 16, 1995 at her home after a long illness. She was born in Austinville on August 8, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Rufus and Norabell Frazier. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Hebron Frazier, and a sister, Mattie Olene Ayers. She was a loyal and dedicated member of the Church of God of Prophecy for 40 years. She was a longtime employee of the Pulaski County school system, having worked in the cafeterias of Central and Critzer Elementary. She recently retired as Pulaski Site Coordinator for New River Valley Agency on Aging. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Roy R. Trivett Jr., Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Roy Michael and Pamela Trivett, Pulaski; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Kaye and Michael Thomas, Richmond, Rachel Christeele and Douglas Branson, Pulaski; sister, Barbara Reese, Pulaski; grandchildren, Roy Matthew Trivett, Pulaski, Beth Anne Trivett, Pulaski, Rebecca Baker, Pulaski, Greg Branson, Pulaski; several nieces and nephews; special niece, Katherine Steele, Pulaski. VENNING, Beverly Heard, 70, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, November 15, 1995. She was born September 28, 1925, in Atlanta, Ga., the daughter of the late Joseph Garrett Heard and Ruth Jacobi Heard. She grew up in Miami, Fla., and earned a BA degree in Education from Florida State University and a MA degree in Fine Arts & Sciences from Hollins College. She took graduate courses at the University of Virginia and at Radford College. She was the wife of the late Selby G. Venning. Mrs. Venning was a teacher and educator for 27 years. She moved to Charlottesville with her husband in 1979 and taught with the Albemarle County System at Stone Robinson Elementary School for more than a decade, until her retirement in 1990. At retirement she was presented with a compilation of appreciative letters from former students in book form entitled ""What Mrs. Venning Taught Me"". Each year, in her honor, the Beverly H. Venning Science Award is given to the school's fifth grade outstanding science student. As a teacher, she helped to formulate the science curriculum within the Albemarle County School System, and after her retirement, she established a Stone Robinson nature trail so that students could experience the natural habitat of the area. Prior to moving to Charlottesville, she was a teacher and a resource and curriculum specialist with the Roanoke City Schools, Roanoke, for 16 years. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Charlottesville, and in her retirement she was a supporter of The Miller Center. Surviving are her children, Laurie Venning Merritt and her husband, Bill, of Atlanta, Ga., Selby Gregorie Venning III, and his wife, Tara, of Smith Mountain Lake, Amy Venning Bordeaux and her husband, Chris, of Alexandria, and Frank Filer Venning of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Jane Heard Askew of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Dr. Joseph Garrett Heard and Col. Allan Paul Heard, both of Coral Gables, Fla.; ten grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Janet Askew Martin Carmichael of Charlottesville. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 1995, in the chapel of the Hill and Wood Funeral Home, with Dr. Joseph Garrett Heard, C.S.B., of Second Church of Christ Scientist, Coral Gables, Fla., officiating. WIRT, Christine Kincaid, 67 of Christiansburg, died Friday, November 17, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital. She was a retired employee of C & P Telephone and the widow of the late Bilton H. Wirt. Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Gay Wirt; two grandchildren, Matthew M. Atway, Ashley Leigh Paige, all of Christiansburg; her mother, Gaye R.
