ARIZONA BUMPS OFF ARKANSAS

Michael Dickerson had a hand in seven straight points and made a crowd-quieting 3-pointer as Arizona beat 16th-ranked Arkansas 83-73 Friday night in Fayetteville, Ark., and advanced to the semifinals of the Preseason NIT.

The Razorbacks couldn't overcome horrendous first-half shooting that included missing 29 of their first 37 shots.

Down the stretch, Arizona (2-0) had little trouble getting easy shots for Joseph Blair and others. During that time, Arkansas (1-1) misplayed two fast-break opportunities and threw up some wild shots.

Georgia Tech 83, Oklahoma 72: In Atlanta, Drew Barry made four free throws in the final 40 seconds and the Yellow Jackets withstood an Oklahoma comeback from a 17-point deficit in the Preseason NIT.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0) built a 73-56 lead on a free throw by Gary Saunders with 8:22 remaining, but scored only two more baskets before Stephon Marbury's 12-footer with 58 seconds to play built the lead to 79-72.

Ryan Minor, who led the Sooners (1-1) with 26 points, sparked the comeback, scoring nine points in a row to trim the lead to 77-65 with 5:00 to play. Minor also had 11 rebounds.

No.17 Michigan 80, Weber St. 62: In Ann Arbor, Mich., freshman Louis Bullock scored 14 points as the Wolverines won a Preseason NIT second-round game.

The Wolverines (2-0) will play Arizona on Wednesday in a semifinal at Madison Square Garden.

Maurice Taylor and Jerod Ward each had 13 points for the Wolverines.

Justyn Tebbs had 17 points for the Wildcats (1-1).

Notes

BYRD'S SMITH SIGNS WITH CAMPBELL: Cathy Smith, a 5-foot-9 forward at William Byrd High School, has signed a letter of intent with Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.

Smith was an All-Timesland selection and Blue Ridge District co-player of the year as a junior.

``She is an athletic and versatile basketball player who plays the complete game well,'' said Wanda Watkins, the Lady Camels' coach. ``She will bring a wealth of experience to our program.''

CAL LOSES STAR: In a bad blow for California's basketball team, star rebounder Tremaine Fowlkes has been ruled ineligible for the entire 1995-96 season for alleged NCAA violations.

Fowlkes was the Pac-10 freshman of the year and Cal's leading rebounder for 1994-95.

The ruling declared the 6-foot-7 sophomore forward ineligible because of improprieties involving a car.

Cal began investigating Fowlkes and sports agent James Casey after questions arose about whether Casey either bought Fowlkes a car or gave him the money to buy it.

COACH QUITTING: Ferris State (Mich.) basketball coach Tom Ludwig says he will resign after the school accused him of using ethnic slurs against a player in 1994.

Ludwig, 53, has a record of 247-139 in 14 seasons at Ferris State and has led the Bulldogs to seven first-place finishes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

TAR HEEL CHARGED: North Carolina basketball player Ryan Sullivan has been charged with possession of marijuana.

Women

N.C. Wesleyan 74, Roanoke 62: The Maroons shot 29 percent from the field in losing their season opener in the Tipoff Classic tournament in Ashland.

Former William Byrd standout Marcee Hufton led Roanoke with 17 points and Lori Boyd added 13.

Emily Sisson led the Bishops with 22 points.

Alvernia 79, Hollins 39: Amy Worley led Hollins with 13 points and 12 rebounds in the team's season-opening loss in Goucher, Md. Sara Tweedy added 11 points for Hollins, which trailed 34-14 at halftime.
