Books-A-Million

Books-A-Million Inc., Birmingham, Ala.-based retailer, reported net income of $644,000, or 4 cents per share, on sales of $48.8 million in its first quarter ended Oct. 28, compared with year-earlier $469,000, or 3 cents per share, on sales of $37.2 million. For the nine months, net income was $1.4 million, or 8 cents per share, on sales of $144.8 million, compared with year-earlier $2.5 million, or 15 cents per share, on sales of $105.4 million.

Hanover Direct

Hanover Direct Inc., Weehawken, N.J., mail-order merchant operating the Tweeds telemarketing and fulfillment center in Roanoke, reported a third-quarter net loss of $9.7 million, equal to 10 cents per share, on revenue of $169.2 million, compared with year-earlier net income of $599,000, or 1 cent per share, on revenue of $178.3 million. For the nine months, the company reported a net loss of $22.0 million, equal to 24 cents per share, on revenue of $528.5 million, compared with year-earlier net income of $6.5 million, or 7 cents per share, on revenue of $542.6 million.

Southern States

Southern States Cooperative Inc., Richmond-based farmers' cooperative, reported net pre-tax savings of $23.2 million on sales of $1.14 billion in its fiscal year ended June 30, compared with year-earlier net savings of $11.7 million on sales of $951 million. The refund to shareholders was $9.8 million for the year, which the company said was more than three times the refund a year earlier.
