SPEEDWAY SETS DATE FOR BANQUET

New rules, along with tickets for the eighth annual awards banquet at New River Valley Speedway, are now available.

Promoter Ronnie Snoddy said 1996 rules for all divisions, including the Late Model Trucks, can be obtained by calling or stopping at the speedway during office hours. Late Model Stock Car rules are sent to participants by NASCAR, said Snoddy.

Tickets for the awards banquet, Dec.9 at the Salem Civic Center, are $20 per person. The event begins at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7. Awards presentations are at 8 with dancing to follow. Tickets may be ordered by calling the speedway office (540) 639-1700. Deadline for obtaining tickets is Dec.1 at 5 p.m.

In other news:

Three members of the Carter Center Marlins placed during the first day of competition at the SWAT Thanksgiving Invitational swim meet at the Dedmon Center in Radford. Three hundred swimmers are vying in the three-day event.

Tommy Rappold set a team record of 5:32.71 in the 11-12 boys' 500 freestyle and finished second overall. Harry Kessler finished fourth in the 13-14 boys' 1,650 freestyle, completing the race in 18:54.32. Teammate Steve Cromer finished fourth in the senior boys' 1,650 freestyle with a team record of 16:52.02. At the 1,000-yard mark, Cromer set a team record of 10:06.56.

Mike Preslar, a regular on the International and National Hot Rod Association circuits, will be joined by the Stanback Drag Racing Team from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today at the opening of the Food Lion on South Craig Street in Covington. Preslar will display his 1996 modified Chevrolet Z-28 Camaro ``funny'' car.
