EMORY & HENRY FALLS IN DIVISION III PLAYOFFS

Chris Begley caught three touchdown passes as Washington & Jefferson ended Emory & Henry's bid to represent Virginia in the Stagg Bowl, beating the Wasps 35-16 on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Presidents (9-0) will face Lycoming College on Nov.25 for the South Region title.

Emory & Henry (9-2) had 208 yards total offense, including J.D. Davis' 92 yards rushing. Barry Wolfe threw for 106 yards, but three of his passes were picked off - two by Bobby Hayes.

W&J's Begley set a school record with 11 touchdown receptions in a season, all thrown by Jason Baer. The junior quarterback has 68 touchdown passes, 20 more than the previous school record.

Jason Barr added 138 yards and two touchdowns rushing for the Presidents.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Villanova 28, Richmond 0: Mark Kiefer's Yankee Conference-record five field goals led the Wildcats past the Spiders in Villanova, Pa., virtually ending Richmond's NCAA Division I-AA playoff hopes.

The shutout was the first for the Wildcats (3-8 overall, 2-6 conference) since September 1992, when they blanked Bucknell 34-0. Villanova picked off three passes and held Richmond to 176 yards rushing.

Kiefer, who was 4-for-9 coming into the game, connected on kicks of 37 and 25 yards in the first quarter and kicked a 42-yarder, his longest of the season, in the second quarter.

A 19-yard touchdown pass from Clint Park to Josh Dolbin gave the Wildcats a 16-0 lead with 7:52 left in the half.

Kiefer kicked his fourth three-pointer with 7:06 left in the third quarter.

An interception by Curtis Dunaway set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Gary Dennis with 10 minutes left in the game. Kiefer added a 32-yard field goal to close the scoring.

Liberty 49, Western Kentucky 36: Antwan Chiles threw for two touchdowns and J.T. Morris rushed for two to lead the Flames (8-3) past the Hilltoppers (2-8) in Lynchburg.

Chiles completed 10 of 17 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns - 14 yards to Tony Dews and 75 yards to Courtney Freeman. Morris scored on carries of 6 yards and 10 yards.

Lawrence Worthington scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, his school-record 16th rushing touchdown of the season. Andrew McFadden raced 52 yards for a touchdown for Liberty, which scored 35 of its points in the first half.

Daryl Houston ran 5 yards for a touchdown and threw scoring passes of 34 yards and 17 yards to Joey Stockton for Western Kentucky, which rallied for 24 points in the fourth quarter. Ron Townsley also rushed 2 yards for a touchdown and Latravis Powell scored on a 1-yard carry.

Hampton 54, Morgan State 20: Malcom Benson rushed 22 times for 193 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Pirates (7-3) past the Bears (1-9) in Hampton.

Hampton trailed 14-0 after one quarter, but Benson scored on runs of 1 yard and 12 yards, and Tyrone Mayer's 12-yard scoring run put the Pirates ahead 20-14.

Benson added another 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He ran for touchdowns of 41 yards and 58 yards in Hampton's 26-point fourth quarter.

Mayer gained 184 yards on 22 carries as Hampton rolled up 474 yards on the ground.
