Teachers also compiled books on Christiansburg and a time line of the town's history. Through these activities, the pupils gained a better understanding and appreciation for their community. They also had the opportunity to visit several public buildings in Christiansburg.
The pupils visited the courthouse, where they saw the records room and courtrooms. At the jail, the pupils toured the recreation areas, the library, the control room and an actual cell. They were even locked up in one of the cells. The pupils also visited the Montgomery County Museum.
The pupils were assigned to create and design their own communities. Later in the school year, the classes will compare their community with other communities, such as Riner and Blacksburg.
The third-grade teachers who lead the study are Diane Naff, Sherri Kenley, Kelly Olsen and Glenna Gustafson.
Two Christiansburg High School students have been selected to represent the school at the Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar at Virginia Tech, Dec. 8-9.
Kristin L. Habeeb and John DeRosset will join other juniors from across the state to attend the annual seminar, where students discuss current problems and issues in their schools and the world community.
A Pulaski County High School team consisting of seniors Jack Warburton and Nathan Brown and junior Graham Fizer placed second in problem-solving at the 22nd annual Mathematics Rally at Radford University on Oct. 11. The school finished behind E.C. Glass High School in the AAA Division.
``This is the highest place a Pulaski County High School team has ever placed in this event,'' Pulaski Superintendent William Asbury said. ``There were 178 students representing 66 high schools from throughout Virginia.''
Fizer finished in first place overall in individual AAA division competition and will receive a $100 award.
Several Christiansburg High School students recently made the 1996 All-District Chorus.

Bass I: Walter Badillo, Preston Caldwell, Brad Manuel, Matt Martin, Brandon Miller, Tim Treadway and Greg Warden, Gabe Hudson, first alternate.
Bass II: Eric Beasley, Jonathan Couch, Travis Dickenson, Matthew Phillips and Jacob Salker, first alternate.
Those who made the Women's Chorus are:

Soprano II: Deborah Stump , Alisha White.
The All-District Chorus auditions were Nov. 11 at Auburn High School. Students rehearsed after school and on their own time under the direction of Charlotte Smith, choral director.
EVENTS, MEETINGS & HAPPENINGS
The Montgomery County Public Schools Title I Program will have its November countywide parents meeting at Margaret Beeks Elementary School today at 7 p.m.
This month's topic is ``The Smart Parent's Guide to Kid's TV.'' Parents can learn how to tame television time at home and how to choose quality programs for children.
Children at the meeting will have opportunity to make take-home crafts to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. After the meeting, families are invited to enjoy refreshments and celebrate National Family Week.
The Blacksburg High School After Prom Party Committee will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the teacher's dining room at the school. This is the group's organizational meeting. For more information, call 552-951 or 951-8683.
