Pulaski delays trash pickup

PULASKI - The Pulaski County Public Service Authority said no trash will be picked up on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23. Trash will be picked up the following day. On Christmas Day and New Years Day no trash will be picked up and all garbage trucks will operate on a one-day-delayed schedule.

Radford trash pickup set back a day

RADFORD - There will be no solid waste collection by the Radford Public Works department on Thursday because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Residents and businesses whose normal collection is on Thursday will have their solid waste collected on Friday.

Residents and businesses whose normal collection is on Friday will have their solid waste collected on Saturday.

Collection will be earlier in the day than normal because the landfill closes early. All customers are reminded to have their waste out for collection by 7 a.m.

Call the Solid Waste Supervisor, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 540-731-3607.

Local heroes sought to carry torch

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games seeks to honor people whose service to others embraces the Olympic spirit by having them carry the Olympic Torch.

The honor will go to a Community Hero, someone who performs outstanding volunteer work, serves as a community leader, role model or mentor, performs acts of generosity or kindness, or performs extraordinary feats or accomplishments.

Community Heroes will carry the 3.5 pound Olympic flame torch in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay for a distance of up to one kilometer. Of the 10,000 torchbearers, 5,500 will be Community Heroes.

People may nominate themselves or someone else as a Community Hero. Nominees must be legal residents of the United States who are at least 12 years old. Applicants will need to fill out an official entry form which includes an essay of up to 100 words on why the nominee possesses the qualities of a Community Hero. Applications should be mailed directly to 1996 Olympic Torch Relay Torchbearer Selection, P.O. Box 6621, Maple Plain, Minn. 55593-6621. Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 30, and received by Dec. 8.

Operation Santa Claus aids mental patients

CHRISTIANSBURG - Operation Santa Claus will be sponsored by The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley. The program raises funds for items for personal Christmas gift boxes for patients at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion.

In cases where patients are indigent or have no families or friends, the project may provide the only gift that patient will receive.

Cash donations for the purchase of gifts will be accepted. Make checks to Mental Health Association of the New River Valley and send to 205 W. Main St., Christiansburg, Va. 24073.
