Tommy Rappold came away with three first-place finishes in the 11-12 boys' age division. Rappold won the 100 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 100 breast stroke. Bryan Palmer won the 50 backstroke in the 9-10 division and finished second in the 100 freestyle and 100 breast stroke. Jake Bova won the 200 IM in the 9-10 division and finished third in the 50 backstroke. Harry Kessler won the 200 backstroke in the 13-14 division.
On the girls' side, Jamie Truett won both the 100 IM and the 50 freestyle in the 11-12 division. Laura Dichtel placed in a couple events, winning the 200 backstroke and finishing third in the 50 freestyle. Blair Huffman placed in three events, winning the 400 IM and finishing third in the 100 butterfly and 200 breast stroke.

Doug Doughty, an assistant sports editor of The Roanoke Times, was a fourth-place winner in the United States Basketball Writers Association Best Writing Contest.
Doughty was recognized for ``A Hero's Fall From Grace,'' an article on former University of Virginia basketball captain Garland Jefferson and his battle to overcome cocaine addiction.
