EX-LANCERS COACH GETS NHL POST

Dave Allison, a former coach of the Virginia Lancers in the East Coast Hockey League, was hired Tuesday as head coach of the NHL's Ottawa Senators.

Allison, a coach in the Senators' farm system, replaces Rick Bowness, who was fired Monday in his fourth season with the team.

Allison, 36, has coached the Senators' Prince Edward Island affiliate since July 1994, leading the team to the AHL's Atlantic division championship last season with a 41-31-8 record. He guided the Lancers to a 36-18-6 record during the 1989-90 ECHL season and also coached the Richmond Renegades of the ECHL.

He made no apologies for his lack of NHL coaching experience.

``I'm not working on a cure for cancer here,'' Allison said at a news conference. ``Last time I saw, the puck was the same size in P.E.I. as it is here.''

Allison's first game behind the Senators' bench is tonight at home against the Winnipeg Jets.

BASEBALL\ Maddux wins Gold Glove again

Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves won his sixth consecutive Gold Glove award, moving into second place behind Bob Gibson for the most by a pitcher in the NL.

Gibson won nine Gold Gloves while pitching for St.Louis. Another pitcher, Jim Kaat, won the most Gold Gloves: 16, mostly in the AL.

Other recipients this year in the NL were: Florida catcher Charles Johnson, San Diego third baseman Ken Caminiti, Los Angeles outfielder Raul Mondesi, San Diego outfielder Steve Finley, Atlanta outfielder Marquis Grissom, Chicago first baseman Mark Grace, Houston second baseman Craig Biggio and Cincinnati shortstop Barry Larkin.
