Garcia, a native of Barcelona, Spain, who came to Danville as an exchange student, was arrested at 2:20 a.m. Friday by Maj. B.C. Elliott, the assistant police chief.
Elliott said he could not release Garcia's blood-alcohol level. Under state law, a driver is considered intoxicated if the blood-alcohol level is above .08.
Garcia, 21, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Danville General District Court.
Cavaliers coach George Welsh was out of town Friday, and Virginia sports information director Rich Murray said Welsh would not be available for comment.
Garcia's 26 field-goal attempts and his 20 successful field goals are both school records. He also kicked a 56-yard field goal at Texas, which tied Kenny Stadlin's school record set in 1984. Garcia is one field goal away from tying Wayne Morrison's career record for field goals. Garcia has 37 in his career.
Virginia finished its regular season 8-4 and tied Florida State for the Atlantic Coast Conference title. The Cavaliers have accepted a bid to play an undetermined opponent in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30.
