EXPRESS WINS IN A SHOOTOUT

ROANOKE NOTCHES its fourth victory in a row by beating South Carolina.

Craig Herr scored the game-winning goal for the second straight game Saturday night as the Roanoke Express defeated the South Carolina Stingrays 3-2 in a shootout in the East Coast Hockey League.

The victory, Roanoke's fourth in a row, marked the third straight shootout victory for the Express.

Justin Duberman scored the first of two first period power-play goals for the Stingrays. Duberman one-timed Scott Boston's right point feed from the top of the left circle past Roanoke goalie Daniel Berthiaume at the 5:34 mark of the first, with Michael Smith off for hooking.

The Express tied the score on its first power play opportunity. Jeff Jestadt scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season and team-leading fourth power-play goal by redirecting Chris Potter's behind-the-net feed past South Carolina goalie Sean Gauthier low on the glove side at 10:56.

South Carolina burned the ECHL's worst penalty-killing unit for the second time in succession at 13:27 of the first period, as Chris Foy shuffled a backhander from the edge of the crease through Berthiaume's pads with just three seconds remaining in L.P. Charbonneau's roughing minor.

Charbonneau made amends late in the second period by snapping home a rebound of Duane Harmer's right point wrist shot at 13:30 of the second period.

After a goal-free and penalty-free third period, the Express would go into a shootout for the third time in four nights, after going the first 17 games of the season without one.

Dave Holum, Herr and Potter all scored for the Express in the overtime shootout, while Berthiaume allowed only one of four Stingray shots to beat him.

Roanoke (12-8-0) has not lost in South Carolina since the first road game in franchise history in October of 1993. The Express has won four straight in North Charleston, three of which have been shootouts.

South Carolina (6-10-2) extended its winless streak to four games and falls to 0-5 as a franchise in overtime against the Express.

ICE CHIPS: After setting an ECHL record for consecutive home victories with 19, the Stingrays have won only once in six home games this season. The Express looks for its fifth straight victory Tuesday night at home against the Toledo Storm. Game time is 7 at the Roanoke Civic Center.
