DOLE LEADS REPUBLICAN RIVALS IN VA. CAMPAIGN FUND RAISING

Bob Dole is way ahead of rival Republican presidential candidates in financial contributions from Virginians, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Sunday.

The newspaper cited Federal Election Commission records that show Dole, the Senate majority leader from Kansas and GOP front-runner, banked $793,740 in donations of $200 or more from Virginians as of Sept. 30.

Far behind is second-place rival Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas at $167,595.

All told, Virginians had given almost $1.7 million to presidential campaigns as of Sept. 30.

President Clinton, the only Democrat garnering donations, had raised close to $500,000 in Virginia.

Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, who lives in McLean, had raised $36,333.
