STATE STARS NOMINATED

Virginia Tech defensive end Cornell Brown and Virginia running back Tiki Barber (Cave Spring High School) are among the 14 nominees for this year's Bill Dudley Award, presented annually by the Richmond Touchdown Club to the state's top college football player.

The award will be presented at a banquet Dec.6 in Richmond. The award, named for the former UVa star and Pro Football Hall of Famer ``Bullet'' Bill Dudley, is voted on by 13 Virginia sportswriters and sportscasters. Three finalists will be announced Sunday. UVa defensive end Mike Frederick won the Dudley last year:

Each football-playing college may nominate one player annually. The 1995 nominees, listed alphabetically by division:

Division I-A: Barber, RB, Virginia; Brown, DE, Virginia Tech.

Division I-AA: Mike Cawley, QB, James Madison; Derek Fitzgerald, RB, William and Mary; Thomas Haskins, RB, VMI; Hugh Hunter, DE, Hampton; Bryan Leibrand, LB, Richmond; David Long, LB, Liberty.

Division II: Rodney Granger, QB, Virginia State; Aaron Sparrow, QB, Norfolk State.

Division III: Tim Armoska, LB, Randolph-Macon; Jermaine Bellamy, RB, Newport News; Robert Hull, DL, Washington and Lee; John Poindexter, WR-KR, Ferrum.

In other sports news in the region:

Billy King, the head pro at Blue Hills, was five strokes off the pace with a 71 after the first round of the Senior PGA Tour qualifying tournament in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Rick Acton led the way with a 66 in the four-round event at the Westin Mission Hills Resort course. King was tied for 27th near the top of the crowded leader board. The top eight receive a full exemption for the 1996 tour, while the next eight finishers get a partial exemption.

Virginia Tech's Cindy Zier and Radford's Jamie Dobson have been named to the Virginia All-State Division I women's soccer team.

Zier, a senior defender, was a first-team selection. Dobson, a sophomore defender, was named to the second team in balloting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. (Complete team in Scoreboard. B3)

Roanoke College forward Meredith Arnott and defender Lisa Franzino and Washington and Lee defender Nicole Johnson were named to the All-State College Division first team.

The second team featured W&L forward Michelle Bauman, Ferrum forward Susan Sautter, Ferrum defender Shannon Sayre, Randolph-Macon defender Aimee Beightol (Cave Spring) and Roanoke goalie Kara Hedges.

There are no more slots available for the Youth Education through Sports (YES) football clinic, which will be held the morning of Dec.9 at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in conjunction with the Stagg Bowl. The event, sponsored by the NCAA, accepted 575 youngsters - 75 more than capacity.
