Craft fair deadline

BLACKSBURG - The deadline for the 25th annual Brush Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair, scheduled for March, is Dec. 15.

More than 100 artists show and sell at the fair, which is juried to ensure quality and variety. Categories range from baskets to pottery to watercolors to woodcarving. Live entertainment, food and children's activities highlight the event, which is sponsored by the Voluntary Action Center.

Claytor deer hunt

RADFORD - Claytor Lake State Park, which biologists have determined is overpopulated with deer, will offer a controlled, primitive-weapon hunt in December and January.

An archery hunt for does only is scheduled for Dec. 9, with an archery hunt for both sexes set for Dec. 16.

A black-powder hunt for does only will be Jan. 5, followed by a black powder hunt for both sexes on Jan. 6.

A total of 40 archery stands and 20 black powder stands will be available.

Book collection

BLACKSBURG - Montgomery County's Kiwanis Club is collecting children's used books at Riner, Kipps, Gilbert Linkous and Margaret Beeks elementary schools.

The books will be given to the Montgomery County Christmas Store and other projects.

Opera tryouts

ROANOKE - Opera Roanoke will hold auditions on Dec. 9, 1-4 p.m., in the second-floor rehearsal hall of the Jefferson Center.

Performers must sing two contrasting arias and should bring an accompanist.

A pianist is available for a $15 fee. Performers who have auditioned in the past two years need not re-audition.

Autographing books

BLACKSBURG - Simone Poirier-Bures, a novelist and English instructor at Virginia Tech, will read and sign copies of her new novel, "That Shining Place," at University Volume Two Bookstore on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Lyric events

BLACKSBURG - A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the Lyric Theatre Friday at 4:30 p.m. Tours of the building will be offered and information will be available on plans for the restoration of the theater.

On Saturday, the theater will show cartoons before the Blacksburg Christmas parade. Showings will begin at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. Admission is 25 cents.

The original version of "Miracle on 34th Street" will be shown Saturday evening at 7. Admission to this showing is $2.

Artists' reception

CHRISTIANSBURG - The seventh annual Gallery of Local Artists will sponsor a reception for the artists Sunday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the New River Valley Mall.

Local musicians will perform and refreshments will be available. Works include paintings, sculpture, jewelry, pottery, stained glass and clothing, ranging in price from $1 to several thousand dollars.

BLACKSBURG - Parents of gifted and talented children are invited to a panel on "Parenting An Exceptional Child" tonight at 7 in 104 Johnson Student Center on the Virginia Tech campus.

The discussion is sponsored by the New River Valley Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. Representatives from area Parent Resource Centers will conduct the discussion.
