Hal Stern of Five-Boro said Wednesday that the new shop - his company's second - will open in March after the retail space next to Books, Strings and Things has been remodeled. Five-Boro has rented the space from downtown property owner Richard Kurshan.
The new shop will open about 6:30 a.m., offering breakfast, sandwiches, bagels and other baked goods, Stern said. It also will play a role in the expansion of the company's wholesale bagel business, he said.
Stern's company has operated a bagel shop in Southwest Plaza on Electric Road in the Oak Grove section of Roanoke County since last year. He decided to open a spot on the Market, he said, because of its heavy traffic and because customers at his Electric Road shop have urged him to open downtown. The new shop will employ about 25 people in two shifts, six or seven days a week, he said.
Martin Brothers Produce has operated on the market for 59 years and at its current location since 1947, owner Maynard Haymaker said. Haymaker said he is looking for another site in the Market area. He was told Wednesday he would have to move, he said.
