The town of Vinton's application for a $500,000 grant to finance flood control measures in the town's Midway section is moving ahead.
"It looks favorable," Vinton council members were told recently by Greg Secrist, the town's assistant town manager/engineer.
Secrist said the application is going through channels at the offices of the Virginia Department of Emergency Services in Richmond.
Officials there have expressed approval of the overall intent of Vinton's flood control plan but they want several changes in how Vinton is proposing to use the money, Secrist said.
The grant will be used to do extensive flood abatement work primarily in the Midway area in the western portion of Vinton.
Even though the grant is coming through a Virginia agency, most of the money will come from the Federal Emergency Management Association.
Pedestrian safety cited in Vinton
Vinton has been recognized by the Virginia office of the American Automobile Association for six years without a traffic fatality.
The town has been awarded a Pedestrian Safety Citation in AAA's Pedestrian Protection Program.
The town also was cited for its accident record keeping, safety laws and enforcement, traffic engineering and public safety programs both in schools and for the general public.
Christmas certificates for Vinton employees
Vinton Town Council has again decided to provide gift certificates for town employees and members of several town agencies.
Gift certificates valued at $25 each will go to employees and members of the volunteer fire department and rescue squad, members of the board of zoning appeals, planning commission, transportation safety commission and the fair housing board.
About 200 certificates valued at about $4,000, will be redeemable at food stores in Vinton.
