RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. GEORGE GORMLEY, 80, will mark his 50th anniversary of ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood tonight at 5 at St. Andrew's Church, 631 N. Jefferson St. Bishop Walter F. Sullivan of Richmond will officiate at the Mass.

Gormley, who now lives at Our Lady of the Valley retirement home near the church, was pastor at St. Andrew's from 1966 to 1981. Today is marked in the liturgical calendar as St. Andrew's Day. The priest, though a native of Pennsylvania, grew up in Petersburg and served several Virginia parishes in Richmond and Waynesboro as well as in Roanoke.

VILLA HEIGHTS BAPTIST CHURCH, 4080 Challenger Drive, has scheduled its Christmas music program by children's and youth choirs for Sunday at 5 p.m. Its director will be Anne Eakin.

SOUTHVIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3539 Peters Creek Road, will present a Christmas play, "Inside the Outside Inn," Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. It will feature The Southview Singers.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY, a seasonal presentation by the Adult Choir and actors, is planned Sunday at 7 p.m. at Green Ridge Baptist Church, 5521 Green Ridge Road. A nursery will be provided.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 310 N. Jefferson St., will present its annual Christmas musicale under sponsorship of its women's club Sunday at 4 p.m. Participating will be the host Altar Choir and a guest group, the choir of First Wesleyan Church.

ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH, Cave Spring, will sponsor a congregational visit to Roanoke Valley nursing homes on Dec. 17 as a group Christmas project.

Teams from the parish will gather at 3:30 p.m. and will spend the next two hours caroling at the homes and presenting residents with small gifts. A parish supper and program will conclude the evening.

MIDWEEK ADVENT SERVICES for the community are planned at St. John Lutheran Church, 4608 Brambleton Ave. S.W. On Dec. 6, 13 and 20 an evening prayer service will begin at 7.

GRANDIN COURT BAPTIST CHURCH is joining others throughout the nation this Advent in sending gifts in shoe boxes to children in war-ravaged Bosnia, Rwanda or areas of Russia. The project is being carried out by Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian relief organization headed by Franklin Graham.

RUBY VEST, active for many years in Virginia Heights Baptist Church, has been honored as the 1995 Baptist of the Year by the Roanoke Valley Association of Southern Baptists. The honor includes having the associational annual dedicated to her.

MORNING PRAISE, a contemporary-style early Sunday morning service begun several months ago by Calvary Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke, has been suspended for the winter. The Rev. Dennis Herman , pastor, said it will be resumed in May.

A CHRISTMAS PLAY, "The Best Christmas Present Ever," will be presented Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. by 40 children of First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem and directed by Tricia Givens. Bring a nonperishable food item to donate to a food drive for Salem Community Pantry which serves the needy in the city and western Roanoke County.

REVIVAL SERVICES are in progress through Friday at Glenvar Baptist Church, 4804 Stanley Farm Road in Salem. Guest preacher is the Rev. Gary Gilmore, a graduate of Bob Jones University and Central Baptist Seminary who now is in full time evangelism. Services begin at 7 p.m. with a staffed nursery.
