KELLEY'S PADS BACK UP EXPRESS

THE VETERAN GOALIE lends a glove in the ECHL team's time of need.

Rick Kelley goes from the Roanoke adult leagues to the East Coast Hockey League this weekend.

Kelley, a longtime goalie in the Roanoke Valley Hockey Association, will suit up for the Roanoke Express tonight and Saturday when it plays the Richmond Renegades.

The Express will be without goalie Matt DelGuidice, who has a family commitment and will miss both games, leaving Daniel Berthiaume as its only goalie.

So Express coach Frank Anzalone called Kelley, who has helped out with Roanoke Valley professional hockey for nearly a decade as a practice player. Kelley will serve as an emergency backup for both tonight at Richmond and Saturday when the Renegades play at the Roanoke Civic Center. He can play only if Berthiaume is injured or ejected.

``Matt told me two and a half months ago he had to go this weekend,'' Anzalone said. ``I knew I'd have to let him go this weekend. So, Berthiaume will play both games.''
