Instead of spending money on parties and gifts this year, Diane Goode of Roanoke decided to contribute to the Good Neighbors Fund in honor of her co-workers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.
"I've worked with most of them for 28 years, and they are hard workers," Goode said. "The neonatal intensive care unit is a very special place, and I don't think they get enough recognition
"We not only have to take care of babies, but we also have to take care of the parents."
Kitty Thomas, supervisor at Dialysis Resources Inc., also made a contribution to the Good Neighbors Fund in honor of the nurses at DRI.
"They work so hard, and they work such horrible hours," because of patients' needs, she said.
The nurses get called away from family dinners and at all times of day, Thomas said. "I'm so proud of them."
