The government on Tuesday publicly applauded retailers that refuse to sell clothes made in sweatshops, even though it might be more profitable.
But retail trade associations say the government's list excludes many companies that should have been mentioned, including some of the nation's largest retailers.
The Labor Department's Fair Labor Trendsetters list named 31 retailers actively working to ensure the clothing they sell is made in shops complying with federal wage and hour laws. The department said other companies may be added.
The list included such stores as Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret. Absent, however, were many major retailers, including J.C. Penney, Kmart, Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck and Co..
