Bath County's attempt to win its first football state championship was put on hold for a day when the Chargers' Division 1 title game against Strasburg, scheduled for Alleghany High School on Saturday, was postponed until today.
Steve Isaacs, Bath County's coach, said school officials didn't believe they could completely remove the snow from the field by the start of the game.
Today's kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. at Alleghany. Both teams have 11-2 records and will be attempting to win their first state football championship. Strasburg has been to the final three times, most recently in 1992, when the Rams lost to Appalachia.
Group A, Division 2
Powell Valley 36, Northampton 6: Running back Thomas Jones broke the state record for touchdowns in a career as the Vikings (14-0) won their second consecutive title, beating the Yellow Jackets (12-2) in Onley.
Jones, who ran for more than 3,000 yards this season, was held to a season-low 104. But his fourth-quarter touchdown gave him 104, surpassing the Virginia High School League mark of 103 by Terry Kirby of Tabb. Kirby went on to star at Virginia and now plays for the NFL's Miami Dolphins.
Group AA, Division 3
Graham 23, King George 18: Brandon Banks ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns as the G-Men claimed the title in Fredericksburg.
Banks scored on runs of 42, 2 and 73 yards, the last one giving the G-Men (12-2) a 23-12 lead with five minutes remaining.
The state title is the G-Men's first since their 1989 team posted nine shutouts on their way to the championship.
King George (13-1) lost despite a big day from running back John Parker, who has combined with twin brother Jonathan for more than 3,000 yards of offense and nearly 50 touchdowns this season.
John Parker scored on a 60-yard run, passed 12 yards to Joey Larman for another TD and then caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Freddie Brooks.
Graham rushed for 305 yards to King George's 160.
Group AA, Division 4
Amherst County 56, Sherando 12: Maurice Clark rushed 13 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown as the Lancers (12-2) leveled the Warriors (11-3) in Lynchburg.
T.J. Cashwell and Camm Jackson rushed for two touchdowns each as Amherst County rolled up 328 yards on the ground. The Lancers threw only one pass, and it was intercepted.
Sherando was held to 65 yards rushing and 70 yards passing. Mark Pearson, who gained 30 yards on five carries, scored on runs of 2 and 27 yards for the Warriors.
Group AAA, Division 5
Hampton 35, E.C. Glass 7: Ronald Curry threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third score as the Crabbers (13-1) crushed the Hilltoppers (11-3) in Newport News to earn their 13th state football championship.
Curry completed eight of 14 passes in the game, including a 77-yard scoring throw to Ahmad Hawkins in the first quarter and a 12-yarder to Kenny Crawford in the second. The sophomore quarterback also ran 1 yard for a touchdown.
E.C. Glass scored its only touchdown in the first quarter, when Andre Kendrick's 5-yard run and the conversion kick gave the Hilltoppers a 7-0 lead.
Group AAA, Division 6
Indian River 13, C.D. Hylton 12: James Boyd hit Sam Hardy on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 2:55 remaining, lifting the Braves (12-2) over the Bulldogs (10-4) in Manassas.
Indian River drove 90 yards in eight plays on the winning drive, with Boyd and Hardy teaming for three passes that totalled 64 yards.
After Indian River went ahead, Hardy helped seal the victory when he intercepted a tipped pass to snuff C.D. Hylton's final drive.
Boyd ran 2 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter as the Braves took a 7-0 lead, and they didn't score again until the final drive. In between, Marcus Farley returned a punt 50 yards for C.D. Hylton's first score, and Byron White ran 9 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
