Car pools, saccharin get reprieves
WASHINGTON - Saying it has failed to reduce auto emissions, the House voted Tuesday to eliminate a 1990 regulation that forces employers in high-pollution areas to institute car pools and other ways to reduce auto travel by employees.
Instead, the 11 states affected by the regulation will be asked to decide on alternative programs to meet emissions reduction goals.
The House also passed a bill terminating a 1938 regulation requiring retailers who sell products containing saccharin to post a warning of the artificial sweetener's potential dangers. Sponsors said such notices are unnecessary because manufacturers attach warning labels.

Magruder's right to vote restored
FRANKFORT, Ky. - As one of his last official acts, Gov. Brereton Jones on Monday restored Watergate conspirator Jeb Stuart Magruder's right to vote.
Magruder, now a minister, spent seven months in prison for trying to cover up the break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972. The break-in and cover-up led to the fall of Richard Nixon's presidency.
Even though Magruder was convicted of a federal crime - obstruction of justice - Jones apparently had the authority to restore Magruder's right to vote.
