ROCKBRIDGE ENDS LOSING STREAK

Jaymie Terrell scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including all four of his 3-pointers, as the Wildcats beat the Cougars and snapped a 37-game losing streak.

``It's the best feeling I've had as a coach,'' said Damon Williams, in his third year as the Wildcats' coach. ``I know it's a non-district game, but, hopefully, this was a start. Our players showed a will to win, which was the most important thing.''

Rockbridge (1-3) trailed 12-6 after the first quarter but came back to grab a 25-23 halftime lead. The Wildcats increased their lead to six after three quarters, 41-35, but the Cougars (1-3) cut the deficit to three.

Cory Whitaker had a game-high 24 points for Covington, which had four players score, three of them accounting for 52 of 55 points. Mike Barber and Brian Holloway had 14 apiece for the Cougars.

Ricky Wright scored 15 points and was praised for his rebounding by Williams, a former VMI star from Roanoke. John Haston added 12 points.

Rockbridge County was 0-22 last season.

Grayson County 52, Carroll County 42: Chad Shaffner scored a game-high 21 points, doing most of his damage inside, as the Blue Devils raised their record to 2-0.

Earl Johnson led Carroll County (1-3) with 16 points.

Liberty 56, Altavista 52: J.J. Coles put on a show in the fourth quarter, lifting the Minutemen over the Colonels (3-1, 3-1) in a battle of undefeated Seminole District teams in Altavista.

With the score tied at 52 with 60 seconds left, Coles stole the ball from the Colonels' Dennis Brown and dribbled the length of the floor for a layup and a two-point lead.

After an Altavista turnover, Coles was fouled with 12 seconds remaining and sank both free throws.

Coles finished with 12 points. Raymond Arrington was the leading scorer for the Minutemen (3-0, 3-0) with 14.

Tunstall 80, Martinsville 63: The Trojans (2-2, 2-2) switched to a zone in the second half to get out of foul trouble and wound up getting a victory over the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-3) in a Piedmont District game in Dry Fork.

Parry McCluer 50, Riverheads 33: Mike Clark scored a game-high 11 points as the Fighting Blues (5-0) knocked off Riverheads (0-2) for the second time this season in a non-district game in Staunton.

Salem 56, Blacksburg 42: Herschel Thomas scored 13 points to lead the Spartans (1-0) over the Indians (0-2) in a non-district game in Salem.

George Wythe 57, Rural Retreat 52: The Maroons shook off a slow start to overcome their Wythe County rivals in a Hogoheegee District game at Wytheville.

George Wythe (3-0, 2-0) trailed 10-3 after shooting 1-for-10 on field-goal attempts in the first quarter. The Maroons took the lead for good with a big second quarter, where they outscored the Indians 24-14.

Freddie Moses scored 13 points and made two 3-pointers to lead George Wythe. Brian Barnes scored 11 and Ted Ring had 10.

Giles 75, Narrows 70: In Pearisburg, the Spartans held off the Green Wave to claim a non-district win.

Aaron Meyers iced the game for Giles (1-1) when he sank two free throws with seven seconds left, pushing the Spartans lead from three to five points. Meyers finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. John King also scored 14 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter, and he added 11 rebounds and four steals.

Robby Claytor was the high scorer for the Spartans with 17 points and six assists, and Josh Stephens added 10 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 52, Laurel Park 45: The Cavaliers took advantage of several Lancers turnovers to pull out a Piedmont District victory in Martinsville.

The Cavaliers (4-0 overall, 4-0 district) scored 13 points in all four quarters. Mancino Craighead made three 3-pointers in the third quarter and scored 17 points. The Lancers (1-3, 1-3) were led by Rashad Wall, who scored 22.

Magna Vista 58, Patrick County 46 A second quarter of cold shooting cost the Cougars in a Piedmont District loss to the Warriors in Ridgeway.

Magna Vista (3-1, 3-1) outscored Patrick County (3-2, 3-2) 10-2 in the second quarter. Magna Vista's Jermaine Simmons kept the Cougars at bay with 15 points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter. He led all scorers with 19 points. Marcus Hairston added 11 for the Warriors.

James River 51, Auburn 47: In Buchanan, the Knights allowed a 32-18 halftime lead dwindle to a three points in the last 90 seconds but held on to beat the Eagles in a non-district game.

Jason Perry led the Knights (4-0) with 12 rebounds, five steals and five points. Brian Shorter paced the balanced scoring attack with eight points.

Craig County 61, Covington Boys Home 53: The Rockets did not have a field goal in the fourth quarter, but made 11 of 14 free-throw attempts in winning for the first time in two games.

Previously unbeaten Covington Boys Home trailed 19-6 after the first quarter pulled to five in the closing minutes.

Girls

Cave Spring 88, Franklin County 31: Cheryl Rhodes had 21 points and Kristin Smith added 16 for the Knights, who scored 30 points in the second quarter after leading 12-9 after the first eight minutes in a Roanoke Valley District game in Rocky Mount.

Pulaski County 80, Patrick Henry 15: In Dublin, freshman Katrina Williams joined two other Pulaski players in scoring 16 points as the Cougars downed the Patriots in the Roanoke Valley District.
