``The Colonel's Cafe Cookbook - A Collection of Recipes from Friends & Supporters of the Culinary Arts Program, Fleming-Ruffner Magnet Center,'' was so hot off the press that it almost felt warm when retired culinary arts instructor Jean Lawhorn stopped in last week to drop off a copy. Lawhorn, who retired in June after 35 years teaching, six of them in culinary arts, considered compiling the book to benefit Fleming's foods program to be her swan song.
The plastic-covered community-style book, with a lay-flat binding, contains a wide and delightful array of recipes contributed by Fleming faculty, friends and students. The Italian cream cake often ordered from the program's catering section; former Roanoke City Schools Superintendent Frank Tota's cocktail meatballs; and a knock-off ``Joggin' In A Jug'' recipe are among them. There's also a section of helpful hints, equivalent measurements and substitutions.
As for Lawhorn, retirement hasn't diminished her signature high energy level. She said that this summer she tried to cram into five days the New York experience, including being in the audience for a taping of ``Regis & Kathy Lee''; visiting Ellis Island; attending a play; and shopping in the Union Square Green Market. She and her husband, Jack, have reforested their Hollins homesite, and they continue to work in their drapery business.
Lawhorn said there are days when she misses teaching. But she still feels the time was right to move on. Just to confirm that she is indeed retired, on the first day of school this year, she intentionally slept late.
``The Colonel's Cafe Cookbook'' costs $8 plus $2 shipping and handling. To order, make checks payable to Lawson Center and mail to Jean G. Lawhorn, 6416 Garman Drive, Roanoke, Va. 24019-4543, or call Lawhorn at 366-4033.
